Rental companies list dance floors by material and finish, and the names can be confusing: parquet, white, black, LED, vinyl, laminate. Each one changes how the room looks in photos, what it costs and what it needs from the ground underneath. This guide compares the common types so you can pick one before you ask for a quote.

The four main looks

Type Look Best for Watch out for
Parquet wood Warm, patterned, traditional Weddings in tents, barns, rustic halls Heavy panels, needs level ground
White gloss Bright, modern, reflects light Glam weddings, galas, winter events Shows scuffs and shoe marks
Black gloss Dramatic, mirror-like Evening events, corporate parties Shows dust and footprints
LED Lit panels, patterns, color Quinceaneras, sweet 16s, bar and bat mitzvahs, clubs Needs power, higher cost, can feel loud in a quiet room

A few rental companies also stock vinyl or laminate panels in white-and-black checkerboard and mirrored finishes. Ask what is available in your date range.

Setup effort by dance floor type Relative bar chart of setup effort from 1 to 5. Vinyl and laminate scores 2, parquet scores 4, white or black gloss scores 3, and LED scores 5 because it needs power and cabling. Vinyl or laminate 2/5 White or black gloss 3/5 Parquet wood 4/5 LED 5/5
Higher bars mean more crew time, more weight or more power planning.

Parquet: the warm classic

Parquet panels are interlocking wood-look squares in patterns like herringbone. They suit rustic, barn and garden weddings because the tone matches wood chairs. On grass, a wood subfloor goes under them, which raises the cost and the setup time. Think of parquet as the best looking option for outdoor tents where a wood look is part of the design.

Pair it with warm chairs: the cross-back and the bentwood read as cousins of parquet.

White: the bright, photo-friendly choice

A white dance floor lifts the room because it bounces light up under the chairs and tables. It is a favorite for winter weddings, formal galas and tented summer events. The trade-offs are practical. Black shoe scuffs show easily, and white panels demand careful handling, so crews tend to lay them last and walk them in socks or clean shoes. If you go white, ask how the company handles touch-ups and whether you can add a cleaning crew for after cocktail hour.

Black: the dramatic option

Black gloss gives the floor a mirror effect. Under uplighting and a disco ball it can look like a stage. Dust shows. So do footprints before the first dance. It pairs well with black-tie events, corporate galas and modern ballroom decor.

LED: color, motion, power

LED floors light up beneath the dancers. Many can be set to a single color, a pattern, or react to music. They suit youth parties, quinceaneras and clubs. Two things to confirm with the rental company:

  1. Power. LED panels need dedicated circuits, and an outdoor tent often needs a generator. See our lighting and power resources before you assume the venue has enough.
  2. Control. Someone has to run the patterns. Ask whether the DJ controls it or whether you need a separate operator.

How to choose

What does a dance floor cost?

Price depends on the type, the square footage, delivery distance, whether the ground needs prep and the install time. We do not publish a dance floor price here. Request a quote with your guest count and venue and we will build the number with your tables and chairs.

Chicago notes

Chicago weddings often go from a cold church to a hot ballroom, and the same floors get used from tents in July to banquet halls in January. Indoor floors on carpet need an underlay or a floor with a non-slip base. Ask your venue about load-in elevators and time windows, because large floors arrive on a cart and need doorways at least 3 feet wide.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most popular wedding dance floor types?

White, black and parquet floors are the classics, and LED is popular for younger crowds. Parquet suits warm, rustic rooms, while white and black suit formal or modern ones.

Is a white dance floor hard to keep clean?

It shows scuffs more than parquet does, so crews handle it carefully and some companies set it up late. Ask how touch-ups are handled before you book.

Do LED dance floors need electricity?

Yes. LED panels need a power supply and usually a controller. Outdoor tents may need a generator. Check circuit capacity with your venue or rental company.

Can I put a dance floor on a carpet?

Often yes, but it depends on the floor type. Many floors need a flat, firm base, and your venue may have rules. Ask the venue and the rental planner before ordering.

What is the difference between parquet and vinyl dance floors?

Parquet panels are wood or wood-look and interlocking. Vinyl and laminate panels are lighter and often cheaper to set up. Both usually come as 3 x 3 foot squares.

How early does the dance floor get installed?

Large floors are usually installed before the event on the day, or the day before for tents. Your delivery window depends on the venue. Confirm it in your quote.
