Neon signs and marquee letters turn plain walls into photo spots. Neon gives a thin glowing line, usually in a name or word. Marquee letters are big light-up characters with bulbs, often spelling LOVE, BAR or the couple's initials. Both are popular for Chicago weddings, quinceaneras, birthdays and brand events, and both need power, a good location and a clear plan for placement.

Most rental neon signs today are LED neon, because it is lighter and survives transport. Ask for the type in the quote.

What can you spell?

Common choices: couple's names or initials, LOVE, MR and MRS, BAR, CHEERS, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, a hashtag, or a company name. Custom neon takes time to make. Rentals are usually a fixed catalog, so check which words are in stock before you design the rest of the room around a phrase.

Where to put them

Power, safety and setup

Neon needs a nearby outlet. Glass neon can be fragile and warm, and LED neon draws less power. Ask the rental company what the sign draws, then check with the venue about circuits, since a DJ, a band and food stations can share one circuit. Use cord covers where guests walk. Do not drape fabric over a sign. Mounting options include a frame or stand, a drape, or a wall mount if the venue allows it. Marquee letters

Marquee letters stand on the floor or on a table. They are heavy at the large sizes and need two people to carry. Large sets like LOVE or BAR look best against a darker backdrop or in a dim room, because daylight washes out the bulbs. If you use them outdoors, check whether the bulbs are rated for rain, and plan for wind.

Pair with a backdrop and stage

A neon sign over a flower wall or on a pipe and drape backdrop is the classic photo corner. Chairs: a velvet chair in front makes a good portrait seat. For corporate events, neon with the company name is a simple way to brand a lobby or reception.

Winter events in Chicago have long evenings, so lit signs show well even in the late afternoon. In summer, an outdoor 7 PM event will be bright for a while, so plan neon for after dusk or inside a tent. Check your local sunset time rather than guessing.
