Pipe and drape is the quiet workhorse of event decor. It is a frame of metal poles with fabric hung between them, and it can hide a wall, create a backdrop, divide a room, shape an entrance or cover a service area. It is also adjustable, so one set can do several jobs across a night. Here is what it does and how to size it.

What it can do

  • Backdrop behind a stage, head table, cake table or photo area.
  • Room divider to split a banquet hall into ceremony and cocktail zones, or hide the buffet line.
  • Hide the ugly parts such as exposed walls, stacked chairs, storage and kitchen doors.
  • Create an entrance or aisle frame at the back of a ceremony.
  • Tent or booth walls for vendors and trade shows.

Sizes and the rules of thumb

The standard stand is adjustable, commonly from 8 to 12 feet and sometimes higher with extensions. Widths come in 10-foot sections that connect in a line. For fuller, more luxurious drape, rental companies often gather the fabric with 50 to 100 percent extra fullness. Ask how much fullness is in the quote.

Choose the height by comparing it to the room, not the picture. A 10-foot backdrop in a room with an 8-foot ceiling will not work, and one in a 20-foot ballroom can look too small.

Fabric and color choices

White, ivory and black are the classics. Velvet and satin add depth. Sheer fabrics glow when lit from behind. Sequin panels work well for photos but throw light in every direction, so test them with the photographer's flash.

Fire safety matters: many venues require fabrics that are flame retardant. Ask for flame-resistant fabric certificates when you book, and ask your venue whether it has its own requirement.

Placement ideas for Chicago-area events

  1. 1Step 1Hide a service doorbehind the head table with a drape that matches the linens.
  2. 2Step 2Create a ceremony nookin a ballroom by draping off one end.
  3. 3Step 3Separate cocktail hourfrom the reception room so the setup stays hidden.
  4. 4Step 4Add soft lightbehind sheers with uplights to make the room feel lit from within.
  5. 5Step 5Frame the buffetso the back-of-house stays out of sight.

Pairings

Pipe and drape pairs with a flower wall rental, a neon sign or a stage deck. For photos, see wedding photo backdrop ideas. A ceremony chair like the garden folding in front of a white drape reads clean and calm.

Questions to ask the rental company

  • What heights and widths do you stock, and what are the maximum spans?
  • What colors and fabrics are available, and are they flame retardant?
  • Does the quote include setup, weights and takedown?
  • How far in advance do you need the venue measurements?
  • Can drape be steamed on site?

Mistakes to avoid

  • Ordering by width only and forgetting the room's height.
  • Using it near open flames or heaters.
  • Not weighting stands for outdoor or tent use.
  • Hanging heavy items such as signs or lights without checking the frame's load rating.

Frequently asked questions

What is pipe and drape?

It is a rental system of upright poles, a crossbar and fabric panels that hang between them. It is used as a backdrop, room divider, wall cover or entrance frame. Height and width adjust to the space.

How tall is pipe and drape?

Standard stands are usually adjustable from about 8 to 12 feet, with extensions for taller ceilings. Check your ceiling height before choosing.

How wide is a pipe and drape section?

Sections are commonly 10 feet wide and connect in a line. A 30-foot wall uses three sections and four stands.

Is pipe and drape fire retardant?

Many rental fabrics are flame retardant, but not all. Ask for the certificate and check your venue's rules before the event.

Can I use pipe and drape outdoors?

Yes, with weighted bases or anchors. Wind can topple a backdrop, so ask about weights and bad-weather plans.

What can I hang from pipe and drape?

Lightweight signs, string lights and florals are common. Heavy items can bend the frame, so ask the rental company for its load rating.
