Marquee Letters for Events: Sizes, Spacing and Power for Light-Up Letters
How to choose light-up marquee letters or numbers for a wedding, party or milestone event, covering sizes, placement, power, safety and backdrops.

Light-up letters turn a plain wall into a photo moment. They also turn into tipping hazards if the base is flimsy or the cord crosses the aisle. This guide covers how big, how many, where to place them and what safety checks to ask for.
Sizes and where they fit
Marquee letters are usually made of metal or wood, with bulbs mounted in the face. LED bulbs are standard now because they stay cool and draw little power. Popular heights are listed in the table. The viewing distances are rough planning guesses, not a standard, so ask your vendor.
| Height | Best use | Typical viewing distance |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 ft | Table decor, cake table, gift table | 3 to 10 ft |
| 3 ft | Sweetheart table, photo corner | 10 to 20 ft |
| 4 ft | Photo backdrop, bar | 15 to 25 ft |
| 5 to 6 ft | Dance floor, entrance, stage | 25 to 40 ft |
| 7 ft and larger | Stage or outdoor signage | Ask the vendor |
How many letters do you need?
Common sets:
- Initials (2 to 3 letters)
- "LOVE" or "MR & MRS" (4 to 6 pieces)
- Numbers for birthdays and anniversaries (2 or 3 pieces)
- Words like "BAR" or "PARTY"
Cost grows with the number of letters, because each is a separate rental that must be delivered, tested and set up. Ask for a quote with a spare bulb kit and a set-up fee, not just a price per letter. We do not publish prices for lighting, so request a quote.
Placement tips
- Pair with a backdrop. A draped wall, greenery wall or curtain gives the letters contrast. White letters on a white wall disappear.
- Keep them out of traffic. Place them where guests will not bump them: a corner, a wall or a stage.
- Check line of sight. Letters should not block the head table, the DJ or the exit.
- Give photographers space. Leave 6 to 8 feet in front for a group photo.
- Mind the bulb color. Warm white bulbs match candles and string lights; see lighting color temperature.
Power and cords
Most large marquee letters plug in. A set of four may draw less than a toaster, but it needs a safe cord run.
- Plan a nearby outlet, ideally on a GFCI if outdoors.
- Use a cord cover across walkways.
- Ask about battery-powered letters for locations without outlets; see battery-powered event lighting.
- Plug the set into one controller or power strip rated for the load.
See cords on grass for lawn setups and extension cord safety.
Stability
Tall letters are top-heavy.
- Ask for a base or stand rated for the height.
- Weight the base with sandbags or a ballast.
- On grass, use boards or a platform so the base does not sink.
- Outdoors, plan for wind. Large letters can act as a sail. Strap them to a frame or move them inside if the wind picks up.
- Do not place letters where guests lean on them.
- 1Step 1Choose a spotand measure the width and height.
- 2Step 2Pick a sizefrom the table based on viewing distance.
- 3Step 3Plan powerand cord path.
- 4Step 4Check stabilityand weights.
- 5Step 5Test the lightsat night before guests arrive.
Using letters at different events
- Weddings: initials or LOVE at the dance floor or behind the sweetheart table.
- Birthdays and milestones: numbers (30, 50) near the photo backdrop.
- Corporate events: a company initial or event name near registration, along with stage lighting.
- Quinceañeras: the guest's initial or the number 15.
Letters also combine with chairs: a gold infinity chair or a clear ghost chair in front of lit letters makes a polished photo spot.
Chicago notes
Many Chicago venues limit what can be set on stages, floors and sidewalks, and some ask for insurance from vendors who deliver large items. Confirm loading dock access and freight elevator times, which matter for 6-foot letters in downtown buildings.
