Garage Party Layout Ideas: Plans for a 2-Car Garage and Driveway
How to set up a party in a two-car garage and driveway, with a floor plan, seating for 20 to 40, heating, lighting and safety tips for Chicago weather.

Garage parties are a Chicago tradition: graduations, birthdays, memorial lunches and neighborhood block parties often take place in a garage and driveway because it is dry, close to the kitchen and easy to clean. With the right layout, it can look surprisingly good. Without one, it feels like a garage with chairs.
A two-car garage plan
Clear the garage first
Before layout, empty the garage as much as possible. Cars, bikes and storage can move to the street or a neighbor's driveway, if rules allow. Put tools, paint, gas cans and chemicals out of reach. Cover shelves with a drape. A garage that looks tidy feels more like a party.
- 1Step 1Clear the floorCars out, storage along one wall at most.
- 2Step 2Check the powerGarage outlets are usually on a single circuit; avoid overloading with heaters and coolers.
- 3Step 3Open the doorLeave the door fully open when people are inside; it ventilates the space.
- 4Step 4Set the tablesRounds in the center or banquets along the walls.
- 5Step 5Extend to the drivewayCanopy, cocktail tables and a lounge for overflow.
Do not run vehicles, generators or charcoal grills in or near a closed garage. Carbon monoxide builds up quickly. Place any generator well away from the door; see quiet generator placement.
Making a garage feel like a party room
The garage floor is hard, cold and usually stained, so cover it. Outdoor rugs or a rented dance floor panel make a clean, level surface, and floor-length tablecloths hide table legs and cords. Light is the second problem: overhead fluorescents are harsh. Turn them off if you can and hang warm string lights or battery lanterns. Check that no lights or cords hang low enough for a tall guest to hit.
Sound carries in a concrete room, so a small speaker is usually enough. Keep the bar and food separate to avoid a bottleneck at the open door, and put the trash and recycling bins outside the garage. Think about the restroom path too: guests will use the house, so set a clear route from the garage door to the bathroom and put a sign on the door to the rest of the house if you want to keep it private.
Seating capacity
| Layout | Seated | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3 rounds of 8 (60 in) | 24 | Garage only |
| 4 rounds of 8 | 32 | Tight; bar on the driveway |
| 2 banquets 8 ft + 2 rounds | 28 to 32 | Better for a buffet |
| Garage + 20x20 canopy | 40 to 50 | Dinner in the garage, drinks outside |
Plan 12 to 15 square feet per seated guest; our square feet per guest chart covers other setups.
Make it look intentional
A few touches change a garage from storage to a party space. Hang drape or fabric on the back wall, add string lights across the ceiling and put an outdoor rug under the tables. A simple linen on each table, like a floor-length cloth, hides the concrete and grease stains. See tablecloth size chart. Tape down cords. A few plants or lanterns at the entrance help.
Weather and heat
In a Chicago winter, a garage is cold, even with the door closed. A propane or electric heater helps, but heaters need proper clearance, ventilation and power; check the manufacturer's instructions. In summer, an open door and a couple of fans are usually enough. See patio heaters: how many per guests and fans and coolers for summer events.
Parking, noise and neighbors
A driveway party puts cars on the street. Check your street's parking rules, and tell neighbors in advance. Keep amplified music low after dark. For larger parties, see hoa and neighbors tent party.

Chairs for a garage party
Hard floors and tight spaces call for compact, easy-to-move chairs. A garden folding chair is the practical choice; a bentwood bistro chair makes the garage feel like a bistro. Use how many chairs do I need to plan the count.
