Is Your Backyard Big Enough for an Event? Chicago Size Guide
Find out how many guests fit in a Chicago-area backyard, with square footage per guest, tent sizes, table counts and layout examples.

Chicago backyards come in two sizes: tiny and surprisingly large. A bungalow lot in the suburbs can host a 100-person tent, while a two-flat in the city may have a 20 by 40 foot patch of grass. Before you pick a tent or count chairs, measure the space guests can actually use.
Start with the rules of thumb
Event planners commonly use a few square-foot rules. Treat them as rules of thumb, not guarantees.
| Layout | Square feet per guest | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Seated dinner, round tables | 10 to 12 | Includes aisles |
| Seated with dance floor | 14 to 16 | Add floor area |
| Cocktail reception | 6 to 8 | Standing, highboys |
| Ceremony rows | 4 to 6 | Chairs only |
| Buffet or bar | Add 100 to 200 total | Depends on layout |
These ranges are widely used in the event industry. Your venue, village or tent company may use slightly different numbers, so confirm with them.
Measure the usable space
Mark the usable area with stakes or flour: subtract the house, steps, trees, garden beds, fences and setbacks. Leave at least 3 to 5 feet around a tent for stakes and walking, and more for a caterer. Tents need stakes or weights, and the ground may hide utilities. See JULIE utility locate for tents in Illinois before staking.
How many guests fit
A 600-square-foot tent is a small seated dinner or a cocktail party. At 800 square feet, a seated dinner for 55 is realistic if the layout is simple. The figures count tent area only; add yard space for clearance, restrooms and kitchen support.
What to rent for a small yard
- Tables: 48-inch rounds seat 6 and use less floor than 60-inch rounds. See round table sizes.
- Chairs: stackable, narrow chairs. The garden folding chair at about $5 to $7 and the cross-back at $8 to $11 both fit.
- Tent: a size that matches the layout. Read backyard tent for 50 guests.
- Restrooms: a house bathroom may not handle 50 guests; see how many portable restrooms per guests.
- Bar and buffet: put them outside the seating area if possible.
When the yard is too small
If the numbers do not fit, there are three choices: shrink the guest list, shift to cocktail style, or use a second space such as the front yard, driveway, garage or a neighbor's yard with permission. See tent on driveway or parking lot. Some hosts split the event: dinner in the tent for 30 and a standing reception for the rest.
Village rules and neighbors
Check whether your village requires a permit for tents, noise or large gatherings. Chicago has its own tent permit rules; see our Chicago tent permit guide. Tell your neighbors in advance, plan parking and set a quiet time. HOA rules may apply; see HOA and neighbors tent party.
