Backyard Tent for 50 Guests: Size, Layout and Checklist
Everything you need for a 50-guest backyard tent party in the Chicago area: the right tent size, layout, seating, permits, power and a planning checklist.

Fifty guests is the sweet spot for a backyard party: big enough for a real event, small enough for a regular yard. It is also where hosts underestimate the yard. A 20 x 30 tent is only 600 square feet, but it needs a clear area close to 1,200 once you add working room. This guide walks through the choices.
Pick the size
| Plan | Tent | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Seated dinner only | 20 x 30 (600 sq ft) | About 12 sq ft per guest |
| Dinner plus small dance floor | 20 x 40 (800 sq ft) | Room for a 12 x 12 floor |
| Cocktail style, standing | 20 x 20 (400 sq ft) | About 7 sq ft per guest |
| Buffet inside | 20 x 40 | Space for a 10 ft queue |
Details on the math are in what size tent do I need.
Measure your yard first
Measure the flat area, not the whole lot. Subtract steps, trees, planters, utility boxes, the AC unit, grills and slopes. Then compare to the tent size plus working room. A 20 x 30 tent is 600 square feet, and with working room you need an open area of around 30 x 40 feet as a rule of thumb. Ask the tent company what footprint they require. See how much space around a tent. Slopes can be fixed with a floor: see tent flooring and subfloors.

Timeline
A backyard tent typically goes up one to two days before the event and comes down the day after. See tent rental setup timeline. Book as early as you can for summer weekends in the Chicago area. Our guide on when to book applies to tents too.
Power and food
Most backyards have limited outdoor outlets. Count lights, music, a coffee station and warmers, and ask your caterer what power they need. Extra circuits might be needed. Keep grills and fryers away from the tent; codes commonly keep open flame and cooking 20 feet away.

Budget the extras, not just the tent
Hosts tend to compare tent quotes and forget the line items around them. Ask each company to price the tent, delivery, installation, takedown, sidewalls, flooring, lighting, heating or fans and permit handling separately, so you can compare like with like. We do not publish tent prices, but we can help you build the full rental list so nothing is missed: tables, chairs, linens, tableware and glassware are as easy to forget as the tent flooring.
