JULIE 811 Utility Locate for a Tent in Illinois: What to Know
Why you call JULIE (811) before staking a tent in Illinois, how many working days notice you need, what is free and who should place the request.

Tent stakes are long, and they go into the same ground as gas lines, electric service, water lines and cable. Hitting one is expensive and can be dangerous. JULIE is Illinois's one-call notification system, and it is the step most hosts forget because their tent company assumes the homeowner handles it, while the homeowner assumes the tent company does. This guide clears that up. Rules and phone numbers can change, so confirm on the JULIE website.
How the process works
- Request the locate. Call 811 or 800-892-0123, or file online at illinois1call.com. The site has separate forms for homeowners and contractors.
- Give the details. You provide the address, the work area and the type of work. A tent stake line is a work area.
- Wait for marks. Utility companies send locators who mark their lines with paint or flags. Do not remove them.
- Stake clear of the marks. Tent crews keep stakes away from the marked areas, following the utility's guidance on tolerance.
- Keep the ticket. Your ticket number proves you called and stays valid for 25 days, not counting the day of notice, or until the marks become hard to see.
Timing
Per 811beforeyoudig.com, the lead time is two working days, excluding weekends, and no more than 10 calendar days before excavation starts. For a Saturday event with Friday setup, a Wednesday request is cutting it close, so submit a week or so ahead and keep inside the 10-day window. See the full tent rental timeline.
Who is responsible?
It depends on your contract. The party that drives the stakes usually should make sure the locate is requested. Some tent companies file it automatically, and others expect the customer to do it. Ask in writing, and ask for the ticket number. Either way, the property owner remains the one living with the lines in the yard.
Which utilities are not marked?
Be aware of what a locate may not cover. Utilities marked by JULIE are those owned by member companies. Private lines on your property, such as a sprinkler system, invisible dog fence, landscape lighting, a well or a septic line, might not be marked. Mark and tell the crew about them yourself, and tell the tent company. Ask a landscaper or your HOA if you are unsure.
Chicago city limits
Inside the City of Chicago, utility locating may run through a different channel. We could not confirm the details for city addresses, so when you call 811 say that you are in Chicago and follow what they tell you. Your tent company has probably done this many times.
| Situation | Stakes? | Locate needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Tent on lawn with stakes | Yes | Yes |
| Tent on driveway with ballast | No | Usually no, but ask |
| Pop-up canopy with 4 stakes | Small stakes | Ask your village |
| Tent on patio with anchors drilled | Yes | Yes |
| Tent on a rooftop deck | No | No, but get building approval |
What if you skip it?
Hitting a gas line can force an evacuation, and hitting a cable can cut service to a neighborhood. You may be responsible for repair costs. Responsible tent companies will want a locate on file before they stake. See tent anchoring stakes vs ballast for a no-dig alternative.

Seating and the staked lawn
Once the lines are marked, plan the layout on the safe area. Garden folding chairs work well in the tent footprint, and our tent layout guide shows how to arrange the room.
