Renting a VFW, Legion or Lodge Hall Near Chicago: What to Check
VFW posts, American Legion halls, lodges and union halls are budget-friendly event spaces near Chicago. What is included, bar rules and what to rent.

Community halls are the hidden backbone of Chicago-area celebrations. Many neighborhoods and suburbs have a VFW post, an American Legion hall, a Knights of Columbus council, an Elks or Moose lodge, or a cultural or union hall that rents its main room. They are practical rooms: a kitchen or serving area, a bar, folding tables and stacking chairs. With the right rentals, they can look like a different place.

What these halls usually include, and what they do not
Every hall is different, so get a written list. Typical inclusions are the main room, folding or banquet tables, stacking chairs, a serving or kitchen area, restrooms and parking. What halls often do not include: table linens, upgraded chairs, decor, lighting beyond the overheads, AV, a dance floor and someone to set up and clean.
| Ask the hall | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| How many tables and chairs, which sizes? | Decides what you rent to fill the gap. |
| Must we use your bar and bartender? | Many halls with a liquor license run the bar themselves. |
| Can we bring outside food and a caterer? | Some halls have kitchen rules or an in-house caterer. |
| Can outside rentals be delivered, and when? | Access the day before is easier and often cheaper. |
| Who sets up and cleans? | Some halls charge a cleaning fee or require you to reset the room. |
| Is there a security deposit? | And what keeps you from getting it back. |
| Accessibility? | Ramp, elevator, accessible restroom. |
| End time and music rules? | Neighbors and the hall's own schedule. |
Turning a hall into your room
The fastest way to change a community hall is three layers. Our banquet hall room transformation plan explains the method in detail.
- Linens: floor-length tablecloths hide folding table legs and make the biggest difference for the money. See our tablecloth size chart.
- Chairs: swap stacking chairs for a style like cross-back or gold Infinity, or use chair covers.
- Lighting and decor: uplighting along the walls, string lights, and a backdrop behind the cake or head table.

Events these halls suit
Community halls are popular for birthday parties, showers, graduation parties, anniversaries, memorials and celebrations of life, fundraisers and quinceañeras. Many families also use church halls and community centers, which work much the same way.
Timing and booking
Halls are busiest on Saturdays from May to June for graduations and showers, and in December for holiday parties. Many halls have regular member events, meetings or fish fries on set nights, so ask what else happens in the building that week. Check your date against the Chicago event planning calendar, and ask about access the day before so rentals can be delivered and set without a rush.
