Vaisakhi is a major day for Sikhs and a harvest festival for Punjabi communities. In the Chicago area, many people celebrate at their gurdwara, and some also host family or community events afterward. Practices vary by family and congregation, so ask your gurdwara and elders what matters most. This guide covers the setup side.

What the day includes

  • Gurdwara visit. Prayers, kirtan (hymn singing) and often a nagar kirtan, a procession through the streets. Many gurdwaras hold these on a weekend near the date, so check with yours.
  • Langar. A free meal served to everyone, no matter who they are, in the community kitchen.
  • Family and community gathering. A meal at home or in a hall, with relatives and friends.
  • Music and bhangra. A Punjabi folk dance tied to the harvest, often with a dhol drum.

If you host a gathering at home or in a hall, you can borrow from the langar tradition without recreating the gurdwara. The important points are to keep the food vegetarian and to welcome everyone.

Langar-style meal setup

Layout of a langar-style community meal Top-down plan. Serving tables with hot food run along the left wall. Two long rows of floor mats face each other in the middle. A row of chairs for elders sits along the right wall. A dance space is at the bottom. Food tables Floor row Floor row Chairs for elders Bhangra space
Keep the walking path clear between the serving tables and the rows.

In a gurdwara, people usually sit in rows on the floor (a pangat), with everyone at the same level. Guests cover their heads and take off their shoes. Seva (volunteer service) is part of the meal, and many people help serve.

For a rented hall or backyard:

  • Serving tables. Banquet tables with chafing dishes for dal, sabzi, rice, roti and kheer. See how many chafing dishes you need.
  • Utensils. Plates, bowls, spoons and cups. Disposable or rented, depending on the size of the crowd. See serving utensils checklist.
  • Water. Pitchers or dispensers. See beverage dispensers.
  • Vegetarian only. Many Sikh gatherings do not serve meat or alcohol. Ask your family what applies.

Floor seating or chairs

Both can work in the same room.

Option Good for Watch for
Floor mats or rugs Langar tradition, kids, a close feel Hard on knees and backs for older guests
Chairs and tables Elders, guests with limited mobility Takes more room per person
Mix Most community events Plan paths and keep elders near the door

Put chairs along one wall for elders and anyone who prefers them, and set floor rows for everyone else. See comfortable chairs for older guests and ADA accessible seating. A rule of thumb for floor seating is about 6 to 8 square feet per person. For related guides, see Sikh wedding reception rentals.

Bhangra and the dance space

Bhangra is lively, with a dhol drum, big arm movements and jumps. It needs a clear, safe floor.

  • Size. A rule of thumb is about 10 square feet per dancer. A 20 by 20 foot space fits around 20 dancers at once.
  • Floor. A smooth floor or a rented dance floor on grass. See dance floor size by guest count.
  • Sound. A speaker for recorded music or space for a live dhol player. See sound system for speeches.
  • Neighbors. Tell neighbors about drums, and check with your village about noise rules.

Spring weather in Chicago

Mid-April can be cold, wet or surprisingly warm. Keep a tent or an indoor backup ready. A tent gives you shade and rain cover, and sidewalls and a heater help on cool mornings. See outdoor events in Chicago in April and rain plan with a tent. Mud is common, so use flooring or mats on the grass.

What most hosts find out too late

  • Vaisakhi can fall on April 13 or 14, and community events often move to the nearest weekend. Ask your gurdwara and book rentals for the right date.
  • Book early for April weekends. Spring is busy for graduations and weddings. Ask when the rental company can deliver and pick up.
  • Plan shoe storage. If guests remove shoes, provide racks or a covered area near the entrance.
  • Count at delivery. Check tables, chairs and serving gear against the quote.

Frequently asked questions

When is Vaisakhi?

Vaisakhi falls on April 13 or 14. Check the date with your gurdwara, since community events often happen on the nearest weekend.

What is langar?

Langar is the free community meal served at a gurdwara to everyone, regardless of background. It is vegetarian, and guests usually sit together on the floor.

Do I need to serve vegetarian food?

For a langar-style meal, yes. Many Sikh gatherings serve only vegetarian food and no alcohol. Ask your family and community what they expect.

Is floor seating or chairs better?

Floor seating follows the langar tradition, and chairs are better for elders and anyone with limited mobility. A mix works for most gatherings.

How much space do I need for bhangra?

Plan about 10 square feet per dancer, so a 20 by 20 foot space fits about 20 people. Use a smooth floor and keep tables out of the way.

Can I hold a Vaisakhi event outdoors in April?

Yes, with a backup plan. Mid-April in Chicago can be cold or wet, so a tent, flooring and a heater help.
