Sikh Wedding Reception Rentals: Gurdwara and Hall Seating
What to rent for a Sikh wedding reception in Chicago, how Anand Karaj floor seating differs, and how to plan tables, chairs and a stage for the hall.

A Sikh wedding is usually a two-part event: a morning ceremony at the gurdwara, then a reception later that day or the next. The ceremony follows the customs of the Sikh faith and the gurdwara's own rules. The reception is a celebration like many others, with dinner, music and dancing, held in a hall. For rentals, the main rule is to keep the two spaces separate: the gurdwara is a place of worship with its own seating customs, while the reception hall is where rental chairs, tables and linens come in.
At the gurdwara: no rentals needed for most ceremonies
Guests in a gurdwara typically sit on the floor in the main hall, facing the Guru Granth Sahib, with men and women often seated in separate areas or sections depending on the gurdwara. Heads are covered and shoes are removed. Many gurdwaras provide a few chairs or benches for elders or people who cannot sit on the floor.
If you have questions about the ceremony space:
- Ask the gurdwara what is provided, including chairs for elders, floor coverings and any limit on decor.
- Do not bring outside furniture into the main hall unless the gurdwara approves it.
- Ask about the langar hall. Many gurdwaras offer a communal meal after the ceremony, and some have tables or floor seating in a separate dining room. Ask the committee what is available and what they allow.
This guide does not set rules for the ceremony. Your gurdwara and your family decide those details.
Reception planning
At the reception, Sikh weddings follow a similar format to many South Asian celebrations: a stage or head table for the couple, family tables, dinner, music and dancing. Guest counts are often large, so plan early.
| Guests | Rounds of 10 | Stage or head table | Dance floor | Extra tables |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 150 | 15 | 10 seats | about 20 x 20 ft | gifts, cake, DJ |
| 300 | 30 | 12 to 16 seats | about 28 x 28 ft | add second gift table |
| 500 | 50 | stage with thrones | about 32 x 32 ft | add buffet lines |
For large weddings, check venue capacity carefully. A hall that seats 500 in rows may seat only 300 at rounds with a dance floor. Ask the venue for the maximum at rounds.
Food, dietary needs and alcohol
Many Sikh weddings serve vegetarian food at the gurdwara langar and sometimes at the reception as well. Families differ on whether alcohol is served at the reception. Ask your family, then discuss it with your caterer and venue. If the reception is vegetarian, tell the caterer so equipment, serving pieces and station layouts match. Our buffet line flow guide helps plan long lines for a large guest list.
Chairs and the couple's seat
Reception chairs should be comfortable for a long evening. Gold Infinity chairs (estimated $9 to $13) stack well at large events. For the couple, a royal throne pair ($75 to $150 per pair) on a stage suits a ceremonial look, and Louis Medallion chairs ($20 to $30) work for family seating. For elders, add chairs with arms near the front.

Chicago notes
- The Chicago area has several gurdwaras in the city and suburbs. Contact yours directly about hours, rules and the langar hall.
- Large South Asian weddings often use banquet halls in the suburbs. Ask each venue about the capacity at rounds and about outside caterers.
