Mexican Wedding Seating: Padrinos, Lazo and Family Tables
How to seat padrinos and madrinas, plan the lazo ceremony and set up family tables for a Mexican wedding in the Chicago area, with a floor plan.

Mexican and Mexican-American weddings in the Chicago area often bring together several generations, long guest lists and sponsors who help the couple with the ceremony, the reception or both. The seating plan has to honor those relationships. It also has to work for a room that is often full of dancing, so you want clear paths between tables and a dance floor close to the family.
Who the padrinos are and why they affect seating
Padrinos and madrinas (godparents or sponsors) are people the couple chooses to honor. Families use the title differently. Some couples have one pair of padrinos, others have several, each sponsoring something specific such as the rings, the bouquet, the cake, the music or the lazo. Because each sponsor is a guest of honor, they usually sit with the couple's families rather than at a general table.
Ask each family:
- How many sponsors do we have, and are they couples or individuals?
- Do sponsors sit at the head table, at a table beside it or with their own families?
- Who needs to be near the dance floor, such as grandparents or the parents of the couple?
The lazo and arras: what to plan for
Many Catholic Mexican ceremonies include a lazo (a cord or rosary draped around the couple) and the arras (13 coins), and sponsors often present them. Whether the ceremony happens at a church or on the reception site, the physical needs are small but easy to forget:
- Two kneeling cushions or two chairs placed in front of the altar or ceremony area. Church kneelers can serve if the ceremony is in a church; confirm what the church provides.
- A small table for the lazo, arras and unity candle, if used, with a cloth.
- Chairs for sponsors in the first row, ideally with a clear line of sight.
- Clear space for photographers and a ring bearer or coin bearer.
If the ceremony is at a church, ask what the church provides before renting anything. Many churches have their own rules about outside items.
How many seats for a boda
Mexican wedding guest lists often run large. Plan table counts first and adjust. Rounds of 8 or 10 both work, and 72-inch rounds make 10-seat tables comfortable.
| Guests | 10-seat rounds | Padrinos and family tables | Dance floor |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 10 | 2 to 3 | about 16 x 16 ft |
| 150 | 15 | 3 to 4 | about 20 x 20 ft |
| 200 | 20 | 4 to 6 | about 24 x 24 ft |
| 250 | 25 | 5 to 6 | about 28 x 28 ft |

Chairs that suit the day
For ceremony and reception alike, look for chairs that are sturdy and comfortable for long evenings. Cross-back chairs ($8 to $11) bring warm wood to a rustic or hacienda-style setting. Gold Infinity chairs ($9 to $13) suit banquet halls, and velvet dining chairs ($18 to $25) in a rich color add warmth at the head table. A throne-style chair pair for the couple is a popular add-on for some weddings.

Chicago notes
Chicago and its suburbs have many banquet halls, churches and outdoor venues that host Mexican weddings. Banquet halls often include standard tables and chairs, so ask what is included.
