Nigerian traditional weddings, often called engagements or introductions, are among the most colorful events in Chicago and the suburbs. Nigeria is home to many ethnic groups with distinct customs, so this guide stays general about the ceremony and focuses on what the room needs: seating by family, a decorated focal point, space for gifts and plenty of room to move.

How the program shapes the room

Many traditional weddings include:

  • A grand entrance by each family, often with dancing and music.
  • Introductions and the formal request between the families, usually led by spokespeople.
  • Presentation of gifts and items from a list, which need table space.
  • Prayers and blessings, often followed by the couple seeking blessings from elders.
  • Matching outfits (aso ebi) worn by family and friends, which makes seating by group visually important.
  • Dinner, spraying of money in some communities and extended dancing.

Check with both families which of these apply. The room plan depends mostly on three things: where each family sits, where the gifts go and how the couple is displayed.

Hall layout for a Nigerian traditional wedding with two family sections Top-down plan with a decorated stage and couple seats at the top center, the bride's family section on the left and the groom's family section on the right, a gift table near the stage, a central open floor for entrances and dancing, and guest rounds at the back with a DJ at the bottom. The couple's seating

Many couples sit on a decorated stage or at a high table that doubles as the visual center of the room. Matching throne chairs are common. A royal throne pair (estimated $75 to $150 per pair) in gold or a rich color suits a stage, and Louis Medallion chairs ($20 to $30) fit a head table. Parents and elders often sit in comfortable chairs beside the couple. Add one or two spare chairs near the stage for elders who may need to sit during long portions of the program.

Counts and table plan

Traditional weddings can be large. Rounds of 10 are common, and some families prefer long rows of chairs facing the stage for the formal program, then reorganize for dinner.

Guests 72 in rounds (10 each) Stage and family seats Gift and display tables Dance floor
100 10 8 to 12 2 about 16 x 16 ft
200 20 12 to 16 3 to 4 about 24 x 24 ft
300 30 16 to 20 4 to 6 about 28 x 28 ft

Use these as a starting point and adjust to your venue. Ask the hall to confirm the maximum capacity, because a 300-person hall seated at rounds holds fewer than the same hall in theater style.

Gifts, display and the small tables

The presentation of gifts can include many items. Count the tables before the day:

  • A long table or two near the stage for gifts.
  • A cake table with a floor-length cloth.
  • A guest book or program table at the entrance.
  • A table for drinks, kola nut or other family items, if your customs include them. Ask your elders what is needed.

Decor and color

Colorful fabrics, headwraps and matching outfits are part of the look. Neutral chairs in white, gold or clear let the clothing and decor lead. Ghost chairs ($10 to $14) and Gold Infinity chairs ($9 to $13) work with strong colors without competing. For the stage backdrop, see our photo backdrop ideas and flower wall guide.

Chicago notes

  • Many Chicago-area banquet halls cater to large traditional weddings. Ask about load-in times, as decorators often need several hours.
  • Confirm sound rules and end time with the venue.
  • If you plan a separate white wedding or church ceremony, order rentals for each event so deliveries match each room.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Nigerian traditional engagement?

It is a cultural ceremony where the families formally meet, the groom's family asks for the bride's hand and the families exchange gifts and blessings. Customs differ among Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa and other communities. Ask both families which parts you will include.

How do I seat two families fairly?

Give each family an equal section with a clear view of the stage, and seat elders from both families at the front. A shared open floor between the sections helps with entrances and dancing.

Do I need a stage?

Many traditional weddings use a decorated stage or platform so the couple and elders are visible to the whole room. If your venue has a stage, you can decorate it. If not, a rented riser can work.

How many chairs do I need for a 200-guest traditional wedding?

Plan one chair per guest plus extras for elders and vendors. For 200 guests that is 20 rounds of 10, plus 10 to 20 chairs for the stage and family seating. Our how many chairs guide explains the count.

Can I rent chairs and tables for a hall that already provides some?

Yes. Many couples rent upgraded chairs for the stage and family sections and use the hall's standard seating for the rest. Ask the venue what outside rentals they allow.

What time should the rentals arrive?

Ask your venue for its load-in window. Decorators often need extra time for stage work, so schedule delivery early and confirm who unpacks, sets up and takes down.
