The nikah is the formal marriage ceremony in Islam, where the couple, with two witnesses and an officiant, sign a contract and exchange consent. Many families also hold a walima (reception) afterward. Nikah ceremonies in Chicago and the suburbs take place in mosques, banquet halls, hotels and homes, and they can be short and simple or part of a full-day celebration. The layout depends on the family's customs, so this guide gives options rather than rules.

The three seating areas

Most nikah setups include:

  1. The signing area. A small table with chairs or cushions for the couple (or the groom and the bride's guardian), the imam and the witnesses. The imam usually leads the ceremony from here.
  2. The family section. Seating for parents, grandparents and close relatives near the front.
  3. The guest section. Rows or rounds for other guests, arranged for a clear view of the signing area.

Whether the bride sits with the groom, in a separate section or nearby depends on the family and the community. Ask the imam.

Two nikah seating options: shared rows and separate sections Two small floor plans side by side. On the left, shared seating has rows of chairs facing a signing table. On the right, separate seating has two sections of rows divided by a center aisle, each facing the signing table. Shared rows Separate sections One section Two sections
Both layouts keep a clear sightline to the signing table; families choose between a shared or divided room.

What to set up at the signing area

A simple nikah setup includes:

  • A small table for the marriage contract and pens, with a cloth.
  • Chairs or cushions for the couple or their representatives, two witnesses and the imam.
  • Space for the families to gather and take photos.
  • A microphone if the room is large. See microphone types for events.
  • Flowers or a backdrop if you want a decorated look. See photo backdrop ideas.

For a formal look, Louis Medallion chairs (estimated $20 to $30) or velvet dining chairs ($18 to $25) work at the signing table. For the guest section, garden folding chairs ($5 to $7) are budget-friendly and ghost chairs ($10 to $14) are a clean modern option.

Row counts for the guest section

Guests Chairs per row Rows Aisle
50 8 per side 4 4 ft
100 10 per side 5 4 to 5 ft
200 12 per side 8 5 ft

Add 5 to 10 extra chairs. Our how many chairs guide explains the extras. If the ceremony and reception happen in the same room, plan the flip: guests move to another room or you reset chairs into rounds. Ask the venue how much time a flip needs.

Accessible and elder seating

Plan a few chairs with arms near the front and near the aisle for older guests. Keep clear paths of at least 36 inches. See comfortable chairs for older guests.

Combining nikah and walima

If the nikah and walima (reception) happen in the same venue, think about flow. Guests arrive and sit for the ceremony, then move to dinner while the room is reset. A cocktail or tea hour in between gives staff time to set round tables. For dinner, rounds of 8 to 10 fit most halls. See ceremony vs reception chairs.

Chicago notes

  • Many Chicago-area mosques, community centers and halls host nikah ceremonies. Ask what furniture is included and whether outside rentals are allowed.
  • If you hold the nikah at a hotel, ask about a private room, ceremony fees and the time you need for the flip.
  • Winter weddings need a coat plan. See coat racks for winter events.

Frequently asked questions

Do men and women sit separately at a nikah?

It depends on the family and the community. Some seat men and women in separate sections, others sit together. Ask your imam and families, then plan the layout.

What do we need at the signing table?

A small table with a cloth, chairs or cushions for the signers, witnesses and imam, and a place for the contract and pens. Add a microphone if the room is large.

How many chairs do I need?

One for each guest plus 5 to 10 extras. For 100 guests that is about 105 to 110 chairs, arranged in rows with a center aisle.

Can the nikah be held at home?

Yes. Many families hold small nikahs at home. Measure the living room, move furniture and rent folding chairs for guests.

How long does a nikah ceremony take?

Many take 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the sermon and the number of speakers. Plan seating for comfort, especially for elders.

What if the ceremony and reception are in the same room?

Plan a flip. Guests can move to a lobby or tea hour while staff set tables. Ask your venue how long the flip takes.
