Sangeet Stage and Seating: Layouts for Performances and Dinner

Plan a sangeet in Chicago with the right stage size, sightlines, table layout and dance floor for family performances.

The sangeet is a music and dance celebration, usually held the night before or a few days before a South Asian wedding. Families rehearse choreographed performances, a DJ or MC runs the show and dinner often happens in between. The result is a hybrid of a theater and a banquet, and it needs both: good sightlines for a program and enough space for a dance party.

Build the room from the stage

Start with the stage, then place everything else.

  • Stage size. A group performance of 8 to 12 dancers needs about 16 x 12 feet. Larger groups need more. A 12 x 8-foot stage fits a small act or an MC. Ask your performers how many people will be on stage at once. See stage and riser sizes.
  • Height. A stage 18 to 24 inches high gives most guests a view. Higher stages need stairs and a railing for safety. Ask the venue what it allows.
  • Steps and wings. Dancers need a way to get on and off without crossing the audience.
  • Power and sound. Speakers, microphones, a DJ table and monitors all need power. See event power needs and sound systems for speeches.

Seating sized to the show

Most sangeets run 3 to 5 hours, with 30 to 90 minutes of performances. Guests sit for dinner and rise to dance. Rounds of 8 to 10 work.

Guests Rounds of 10 Stage Dance floor Walkway to stage
100 10 12 x 12 ft about 16 x 16 ft 4 ft
200 20 16 x 12 ft about 24 x 24 ft 6 ft
300 30 20 x 16 ft about 28 x 28 ft 6 ft

Keep the nearest table at least 8 to 10 feet from the stage edge for sightlines and safety, and leave a clear lane for performers.

Sightlines and table angles

Round tables with all chairs around the table leave some guests with their backs to the stage. Fix it by:

  • Leaving the stage side of each table empty (seating 6 to 7 instead of 10 on front tables).
  • Angling tables slightly toward the stage.
  • Placing family and elders at the front where they see best.
  • Using high-top cocktail tables at the back for guests who want to stand.

Stage seating and the couple

Many couples sit at a sweetheart table or on a sofa near the stage rather than on it. Others sit on thrones on the stage. A royal throne pair (estimated $75 to $150 per pair) suits either, and Louis Medallion chairs ($20 to $30) are an elegant alternative. For banquet seating, Gold Infinity chairs ($9 to $13) stack and look good under stage lighting. For ideas see our head table setups and sweetheart table chair ideas.

Lighting and sound

Stage lighting, uplights and a clear sound plan shape the night. Check the venue for house lights and ask performers when they need rehearsal time. See corporate stage lighting basics and how many uplights for a wedding.

Chicago notes

  • Many Chicago-area banquet halls and hotels have built-in stages. Ask for measurements and weight limits, then decide whether to add a riser.
  • Ask about load-in times for sound equipment and decor. Performers often want a sound check.
  • Parking and loading docks in downtown Chicago can limit delivery times. Plan ahead.

Frequently asked questions

How big should a sangeet stage be?

A stage of 16 x 12 feet works for most group dances. For small acts or an MC, 12 x 8 feet is enough. Ask performers how many dancers are on stage at once.

Where should family sit?

At the front, close to the stage, so elders can see and hear. Place the couple's table near them.

How many tables do I need for 200 guests?

About 20 rounds of 10, plus tables for gifts, DJ and food. Use fewer seats at front tables to keep sightlines clear.

Do I need a dance floor and a stage?

Usually yes. The stage is for performances, and the dance floor is for the open dancing that follows. Some venues have a built-in floor.

How far should tables be from the stage?

At least 8 to 10 feet, so guests can see the whole stage and dancers have room. Follow your venue's rules.

Can I host a sangeet outdoors in Chicago?

Yes, in warm months, with a tent, a stage and a weather plan. See outdoor event chairs and weather and tent permits.
