Tailgate Party Rentals in Chicago: Canopies, Tables and Rules
What to rent and what to check for a fall football tailgate in Chicago: canopy, folding tables, grill rules, cold-weather gear and parking lot limits.

A good tailgate in Chicago in October or November is a cold-weather party in a parking lot. Wind comes off the lake, the sun is gone early in the evening, and the cars next to you are closer than you think. Whether you are heading to a Bears game, a college game or a high school Friday night, the setup is the same: a place to sit, a place to cook, and a way to stay warm. This guide covers the rentals and the rules, so the day goes the way you planned.
What to rent
| Item | Why | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 10 by 10 canopy | Shade, rain, some wind cover | Needs weights, not stakes, on pavement |
| Folding tables | Food, drinks, games | 6 ft is easy to move; 8 ft seats more |
| Folding chairs | Seating for a crew | Count one per person, plus spares |
| Linens or table covers | Wind and spills | Clips hold cloths on a windy lot |
| Heater | Cold afternoons and evenings | Propane rules apply, see below |
| Coolers, beverage tubs | Cold drinks | Ice tubs also hold bottles |
| Lights | Evening and night games | Battery or generator-powered |
Rental companies are not always set up for a small tailgate order, because they plan for events with 50 or more guests. Ask about a small-order option or will call. A truck that has to find a spot at a lot where everyone is arriving at once can be a problem, so you may want to pick up and return your items. For more, see our first-time rental guide.
Check the lot rules first
This is the part most people skip. Each lot, stadium, school and park district has its own rules, and they can change by game. Check with the team, school, park district or lot operator before you book. Ask:
- Canopy size and number. Some lots limit the size or require that tents stay inside the space.
- Grills and propane. Are charcoal and gas grills allowed? Is open flame or propane allowed under a canopy?
- Arrival and departure times. When does the lot open, and when must you leave?
- Delivery access. Can a rental truck get into the lot at all? Many can't.
- Alcohol and glass. Rules on drinks and glass differ by place, so check before you rent glassware.
- Generators and power. Some lots don't allow them.
- Space size. A standard parking space is smaller than you expect, and a setup for 20 people needs more.
Grills
If the lot allows grills, keep them clear of the canopy, the vehicles and your guests. A grill under a canopy is a fire risk, because the fabric can catch from heat and sparks. Keep a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher nearby, and never leave it alone. Check the manual and the lot rules for charcoal, ash disposal and propane tank storage. Grill rental for events goes through what to ask a company. For food safety, see food safety at home parties, because the same rules apply at a lot.
Cold-weather tailgating
- 1Step 1Pick the right heatA patio heater needs open space around it, and propane rules for lots vary. Read [patio heater propane](/blog/patio-heater-propane-how-much-and-who-supplies).
- 2Step 2Block the windPark so the vehicle is on the windward side, and use canopy side walls if the lot allows.
- 3Step 3Feed people hotChili, soup and coffee beat cold sandwiches. A slow cooker needs power, so check before you plan it.
- 4Step 4Keep drinks from freezingCoolers keep cold things cold, but in a Chicago November they can also keep them from freezing.
- 5Step 5Plan for darkIn late fall the sun goes down early. Bring lights and a way to pack up safely.
What most hosts find out too late
- Canopy weights matter more than the canopy. A pop-up canopy catches wind like a sail. Stakes don't work on pavement. Use weights on every leg. See pop-up canopy vs rented tent.
- Rental trucks can't always reach your spot. A closed lot, traffic and gates may stop a drop-off at your space. Ask about will call or a meeting point.
- A grill and a canopy are rarely a good mix. Keep fire away from fabric.

Other kinds of games
A Bears game means a big lot, a stadium area and busy traffic. Rules are set by the stadium and the park district, so check them. A college game often has a campus lot with a permit. A high school game may be held in a school lot or a park, and rules are set by the school or district. A neighborhood tailgate in a backyard is easier. See backyard party rentals and school events.
