A pool party is one of the easiest Chicago-area summer events to host, and one of the quickest to go wrong if the wrong chairs get wet. Water, sunscreen and bare feet all change what seating actually works.

Which chairs work around a pool

Skip anything that absorbs water. A chair that gets soaked once can warp, mildew or stain in a day, and a wet cushion is nobody's first choice to sit on.

Mid-century shell chair Gold infinity chair
  • Mid-century shell chair: a molded shell seat with no fabric to soak up splashes. Good right in the splash zone or at a dry-zone dining table.
  • Gold infinity chair: a metal frame, marked outdoor-friendly in our catalog, for a dry-zone lounge that still looks dressed up.
  • Cross-back and windsor are also outdoor-friendly and work in the dry zone. None of these three are padded, so if you add a cushion, take it off before anyone sits down wet.
  • Rattan garden chair is natural woven rattan, built for outdoor garden parties rather than direct splash exposure. Keep it in the dry zone under cover, not right at the pool edge.

Leave upholstered chairs like velvet dining or Louis medallion out of a pool party altogether, or well back in a covered lounge area.

Splash zone and dry zone

Backyard pool party seating zones: water-safe loungers in the splash zone around the pool, and a separate shaded dry zone with tables for dining away from the water
Keep anything that shouldn't get wet out of splash range.
  1. Splash zone, right around the pool edge: water-safe loungers and chairs only, spaced so people can walk and carry towels without knocking into each other.
  2. Dry zone, a few feet back: dining chairs and tables for food, drinks, speakers and phones, under shade if you can.
  3. Shade over the dry zone. An umbrella or shade sail keeps both guests and any electronics out of direct sun.
  4. A clear path from the pool to the bathroom and the gate, kept free of furniture so nobody trips with wet feet.

If you're using an HOA or condo pool

Many HOAs and condo buildings in the Chicago area allow private pool parties but set their own rules. Before you book rentals, ask the management office or the pool committee:

  • Is outside furniture allowed, and does it need to be approved?
  • Is there a reservation window, and when do you need to be set up and cleared out by?
  • Where can a delivery vehicle park, and how far is the carry to the pool deck?
  • Are there limits on guest count or noise?

For a backyard party on your own property, you still want a level, stable spot for chairs. Our guide to chairs on grass, sand and gravel covers how to keep seating steady on soft ground near a pool deck.

How many chairs to rent

A pool party rarely needs a seat for every guest at once, since people move between the water, the food table and the lounge area. A simple rule of thumb:

  • Splash-zone loungers: enough for about half your guest count at a time
  • Dry-zone dining: seats for everyone eating at once, if you're serving a sit-down meal
  • Shade: at least one umbrella or sail over the dry zone for every 8 to 10 seats

Frequently asked questions

What kind of chairs should you use at a pool party?

Use chairs built for water, such as resin, rattan-style or metal frames with drainage holes. Avoid upholstered or wood chairs near the pool, since they absorb water and can warp, mildew or stain.

How do you set up seating for a pool party?

Split the space into a splash zone with water-safe chairs right around the pool, and a dry zone further back with tables, shade and any seating you don't want to get wet, such as cushioned lounge chairs.

Can you bring rental furniture to an HOA or condo pool?

Often yes, but every building sets its own rules. Ask the management office or pool committee whether outside furniture needs approval, what the reservation window is, and where a delivery vehicle can park.

How many chairs do I need for a pool party?

Plan loungers for about half your guest count at a time, since people move between the water and the seating, plus enough dry-zone seats for everyone if you're serving a sit-down meal.
