Cinco de Mayo is popular across Chicago, from Pilsen and Little Village to the suburbs and downtown offices. It also gets mixed up with Mexican Independence Day, so it helps to know what the day is. It marks the Mexican army's victory over French forces at Puebla in 1862, and it is celebrated more widely in the United States than in most of Mexico. Mexican Independence Day is September 16, and El Grito is the night of September 15. Share that with your guests, and keep the party respectful.

Pick the date and place

May 5, 2027 falls on a Wednesday. A weeknight backyard party needs an early start. Many hosts pick the nearest weekend, or an office lunch on the day itself.

  • Backyard. Room for a taco bar, music and kids' games. See backyard party layout plan.
  • Office. A lunch event in a conference room, a lobby or a parking lot with a tent. Check building rules for food and music.
  • Hall or park. Check with your village or park district for any rules.

The taco bar

A taco bar is easy to scale from 15 guests to 150, if you plan the equipment and the line.

Taco bar line from start to finish A left to right serving line on a long table. Stations in order: plates, tortillas, hot meats, toppings, salsas and sauces, and napkins and utensils at the end. Plates Tortillas Meats Toppings Salsas Napkins Guests walk this way, left to right

Equipment Use Notes
Chafing dishes Keep meat, beans and rice hot Need fuel, and the fuel may not be included
Tortilla warmer or insulated basket Keep tortillas soft Cover with a clean towel
Cold pans on ice Keep salsa, cheese and sour cream cool Refill ice during the party
Serving spoons and tongs One per dish Prevent cross-contact between dishes
Hotel pans and sneeze guards Open food in a crowd Check what your caterer needs

A common rule of thumb is 2 to 3 tacos per adult, plus sides. See how much food per person and food station equipment. For safe holding times, see keeping food hot outdoors and keeping food cold outdoors.

Aguas frescas and drinks

Aguas frescas are light fruit drinks, such as horchata (rice and cinnamon), jamaica (hibiscus), tamarindo and fruit waters like watermelon or pineapple. Glass dispensers with a spigot commonly hold 2 to 5 gallons each. Ask the rental company for the size, and whether it has an ice core.

Set drinks on a table apart from the food so lines do not block each other. See how many beverage dispensers you need and water station dispensers. If you serve alcohol, check Illinois alcohol rules for private events and keep a non-alcohol option out for everyone.

Early May weather: shade and heat

Early May in Chicago can bring a cool, windy day near the lake or a hot afternoon inland. Plan for both.

  1. 1Step 1Check the forecast a week outThen again two days before.
  2. 2Step 2Add shadeMarket umbrellas or a tent for the food and the seating.
  3. 3Step 3Add warmthA heater or sidewalls if the evening is cool.
  4. 4Step 4Keep food in the shadeFood left in the sun spoils faster.
  5. 5Step 5Have a rain planA tent or a garage.

Music and dancing space

Mariachi, banda, cumbia and Latin pop all work. Choose the sound and plan for the space.

  • Clear a dance area. About 10 square feet per dancer, away from the food line.
  • Place the speaker or DJ at one end. Point it away from neighbors.
  • Check noise rules. Ask your village about hours and limits.
  • Power. Plan outlets and cords. See event power needs checklist.

What most hosts find out too late

  • Deliveries on a weekday. A Wednesday event means the rental crew drops off in the morning and picks up in the evening or the next day. Ask what time and where they will stage.
  • Book early. Cinco de Mayo falls near graduations and Mother's Day. Check your date as soon as you can.
  • Count at delivery. Verify chafing dishes, dispensers and tables against the quote.
  • Plan trash. Taco bars create a lot of waste. See trash and recycling stations.
