The mehndi, or henna night, is a lively pre-wedding celebration in South Asian traditions, with henna for the bride and guests, music, dance and food. It is more relaxed than the ceremony and more social than the reception, which means the layout should feel like a lounge rather than a banquet. This guide focuses on the seating and room plan. For a broader look at the whole wedding week, see our South Asian wedding seating guide, and for the stage and dance side, our sangeet stage and seating guide.

What the evening needs

Programs vary, but a typical mehndi includes:

  • Henna application for the bride (often hours long) and for guests. Artists need a comfortable seat, a small table and good light.
  • A decorated bride's seat. A swing, throne or sofa on a small stage or riser.
  • Lounge groupings for family and friends to sit, talk and eat.
  • Music and dance. A DJ and open floor, often for family performances.
  • Food stations or a buffet.

Lounge counts by guest number

Guests Lounge seats Henna chairs Dance floor Dinner tables
50 20 2 to 3 about 12 x 12 ft 5 rounds of 10, if seated
100 35 4 to 6 about 16 x 16 ft 10 rounds of 10
150 50 6 to 8 about 20 x 20 ft 15 rounds of 10

These are rules of thumb. A true mehndi lets people drift between henna, dancing and food, so you seat around a third of guests at a time in lounge seating, and add dinner tables if you serve a full meal. See lounge layouts by guest count.

Seating options

  • Sofas and settees. Velvet pieces in jewel colors suit the mood. See velvet sofas and settees for events.
  • Floor cushions and low tables. Great for a relaxed look, but not everyone can sit on the floor. Mix them with sofas and chairs.
  • Chairs for henna artists. Sturdy, comfortable chairs with a stable base. The bride may sit for hours, so choose comfort over style.
  • A throne or swing for the bride. A royal throne pair (estimated $75 to $150 per pair) or a velvet dining chair ($18 to $25) suits the focal seat. Add a small riser if the stage is flat.

Henna station setup

Each station needs a chair for the guest, a stool or chair for the artist, a small side table and good light. Guests often sit for 10 to 20 minutes, while the bride may sit for hours. Keep the stations away from food and spills. Provide a small table with wipes and a place to rest hands while henna dries. Ask your artist how much space they need.

Chicago notes

  • Many Chicago-area banquet halls, backyards and community centers host mehndi nights. Ask your venue about decor limits and floor cushions.
  • If the event is at home, measure doors for sofas and check elevator access.
  • Check noise rules if you plan a late DJ set, especially in condos and residential blocks.

Frequently asked questions

How much lounge seating do I need for a mehndi?

Around a third of guests at a time is a good rule of thumb. For 100 guests, plan 30 to 40 lounge seats and add dinner tables if you serve a meal.

Do I need floor cushions?

Not required. They add a casual look, but many guests prefer sofas or chairs. Offer a mix.

How many henna stations should I have?

Plan one station per 25 to 30 guests who want henna. For 100 guests, that is 4 to 6 chairs, but check with your henna artists.

What should the bride sit on?

A comfortable, decorated seat such as a throne chair, sofa or swing. She may sit for hours, so comfort matters.

Can I hold a mehndi at home?

Yes, for small groups. Measure your space and plan seating that is easy to move. For more than 40 guests, consider a hall or a tent.

Do I need a stage?

Only for the bride's seat, performances or speeches. A low riser works for most events. See stage and riser sizes.
