Forest Preserve Events Near Chicago: Permits, Groves and Rentals
Planning a picnic, reunion or party at a forest preserve near Chicago? Permits, shelters, rules on tents and alcohol, restrooms and what to rent.

Forest preserves are some of the best-value event spaces in the Chicago area: big lawns, shade trees, shelters and parking, often at a fraction of a venue's cost. They work beautifully for family reunions, company picnics, birthday parties, church picnics and community events. The trade-off is that you bring almost everything, under the district's rules.

Who runs the preserves
Each county has its own forest preserve district with its own permits and rules:
- Forest Preserves of Cook County, covering Chicago and suburban Cook County.
- Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, including sites near Wheaton, Glen Ellyn and Naperville.
- Forest Preserve District of Kane County, including sites around St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia, such as Fabyan Forest Preserve.
- Lake County Forest Preserves, in the north suburbs.
- Forest Preserve District of Will County, in the southwest suburbs.
City parks and suburban park districts are separate systems with their own permits. See our guides to the Chicago Park District event permit and suburban park district pavilion rentals.
Grove, shelter or open lawn
Most districts offer a mix of picnic groves (an open area with some picnic tables), shelters (a roofed structure, sometimes with electricity) and larger areas for big groups. A shelter gives you a built-in rain plan for part of the group. An open grove gives you room for a tent, games and more tables. Ask for the number of picnic tables already on site, because it decides how many you rent.
The rules to check before you rent
| Rule | Why it affects rentals |
|---|---|
| Group size and permit | A permit sets your area, date and hours. |
| Tents | Some sites allow tents with approval; staking may be limited. |
| Vehicles on grass | Usually not allowed, so rentals are carried from the lot. |
| Alcohol | Rules differ by district; some require a permit, some ban it. |
| Amplified sound | Often limited or needs approval. |
| Inflatables and generators | Often need approval or are restricted. |
| Restrooms | Some sites have flush restrooms, some have only basic facilities. |
| Cleanup and hours | Trash, decorations and your end time. |
Because vehicles usually stay off the grass, the distance from the lot to your area matters. Tell your rental team how far it is, and choose a spot near the lot if you are bringing heavy items. If tent stakes are allowed, Illinois law requires a utility locate before digging; see JULIE utility locates for tents. If staking is not allowed, ask about ballast; see stakes vs ballast.
What to rent for a forest preserve event
- Tents: shade and a rain plan beyond the shelter.
- Tables and chairs: garden folding chairs handle grass well.
- Games & kids: lawn games are the heart of a reunion or company picnic.
- Catering equipment: grills, chafers and drink coolers.
- Restrooms & power: if the site lacks restrooms or electricity, and the district allows them.

Forest preserve events run mainly from May to September, with June to August the busiest for reunions and company picnics. Popular groves book early in the year, often as soon as reservations open.
