Eid Celebration Seating and Rentals: Layouts for Home and Hall

Plan an Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha gathering in Chicago with seating for large families, a buffet and kids area, prayer space and tables for sweets.

Eid al-Fitr, which ends Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha are celebrated by Muslim communities across Chicago and the suburbs. Celebrations range from a living-room brunch for 20 to a community banquet for 300. What they share is a focus on family, food and children, so the rental plan is mostly about seating a lot of people comfortably and serving them well. Practices vary by family and community, so use this guide as a checklist and ask your own family about its traditions.

Start with the guest list and the format

Eid celebrations often happen as an open house, a brunch, a lunch or a dinner. Choose the format first because it changes the table count:

  • Open house. Guests come and go. Plan seating for about half the guest list at once.
  • Seated meal. Everyone eats together. Plan a seat for every guest.
  • Community banquet. Plan rounds of 10, a stage or microphone area and a larger buffet.

Many families split men and women or families and singles into different rooms or areas. Ask your family and the venue whether this applies and plan the layout accordingly.

Table sizes and counts

Table Seats Best for
8 ft banquet (96 x 30 in) 8 to 10 Family-style meals, long rows
6 ft banquet (72 x 30 in) 6 to 8 Smaller rooms, kids tables
72 in round 10 Banquet halls and big families
60 in round 8 Small halls and backyards

For 60 guests, plan six 8-foot tables at 10 seats each, or six 72-inch rounds. For 150 guests, plan 15 rounds of 10. See banquet table sizes for details on fit and spacing.

The kids table and the dessert table

Eid is a children's holiday. Give kids their own table and chairs, close enough for parents to watch. Our kids tables and chairs guide covers sizes. A sweets and dates table is a highlight in many homes: use a 6-foot banquet table with a floor-length cloth, tiered stands and plates. See dessert table equipment.

Prayer space and quiet corners

Some families pray together during the gathering. If that matters, set aside a quiet, clear area for prayer mats, away from loud music and the buffet. Ask the venue or your family how big it should be. A few chairs nearby help elders who cannot sit on the floor.

Chairs for a full house

Choose chairs that stack and move easily so you can adapt the room. Garden folding chairs ($5 to $7 estimated) are a budget-friendly choice for large crowds. Gold Infinity chairs ($9 to $13) suit banquet halls, and cross-back chairs ($8 to $11) work well for a warm, family-style dinner. Pad the seats for long sitting or add cushions for elders.

Chicago notes

  • Eid can fall in any season. Spring and summer dates make an outdoor party possible. Read our outdoor event chairs and weather guide and our tent permit guide if you use a tent.
  • For a community center, mosque hall or park pavilion, ask what is included and whether outside rentals are allowed.
  • Park districts have their own reservation rules. Check with the district before planning to bring tables or tents.

Frequently asked questions

How many tables do I need for a 100-person Eid party?

For a seated meal, plan 10 rounds of 10 or about 10 eight-foot tables. For an open house where guests come and go, you can use fewer tables and add lounge seating.

Should I separate seating for men and women?

Some families do, others do not. Ask your family and your guests, then plan separate rooms, sections or tables if needed. Make sure each area has similar access to food and the program.

How do I handle a date that depends on moon sighting?

Book your venue and rentals with a flexible date if you can, and confirm the final date as soon as it is known. Ask rental companies about change policies.

Do I need a stage for an Eid banquet?

Only if you plan speeches, performances or awards. A small riser with a microphone is enough for most community events.

How do I serve many guests quickly?

Use two buffet lines or serve family-style at the tables. Learn more in our buffet line flow guide.

Can I rent for a backyard Eid party?

Yes. Check your local rules for tents and rental delivery access, and plan a rain backup. Our rain plan guide helps.
