6 ft banquet table (seats 6)

Rectangular banquet tables are the workhorse of Chicago-area events: church halls, park district rooms, school gyms, backyard tents and plenty of wedding venues. The two lengths look similar until you try to fit 40 people in a 30-foot room. This guide gives you the numbers you need, the layouts that work and the linen sizes that go with each.

Top-down 6 ft and 8 ft banquet tables with seats and dimensions A top-down diagram shows a 6 foot banquet table, 72 by 30 inches, with 3 chairs on each side and one at each end, and an 8 foot table, 96 by 30 inches, with 4 chairs each side and one at each end, drawn to scale. 6 ft: 72 x 30 in Seats 6, or 8 with ends 8 ft: 96 x 30 in Both 30 in deep Plates fit, big flowers do not
Both tables are 30 inches deep and 30 inches tall. Only the length changes.

Banquet table size chart

Table Size Seats (sides only) Seats (with ends) Floor-length cloth Lap-length cloth
6 ft 72 x 30 in 6 8 90 x 132 in 60 x 102 in
8 ft 96 x 30 in 8 10 90 x 156 in 60 x 126 in
6 ft seminar 72 x 18 in 3 (one side) 3 Skirting n/a
8 ft seminar 96 x 18 in 4 (one side) 4 Skirting n/a

Seats-with-ends numbers are the tight setup. Plated dinners with multiple glasses are comfortable at the sides-only count. For a full explanation of cloth sizes see our tablecloth size chart.

When to pick a 6-foot table

  • Small rooms. A 6 ft table is easier to place around columns, stages and doors.
  • Head tables for a small wedding party. A 6 ft table seats 4 on one side, as long as chairs are spaced out.
  • Service tables. Guest book, gifts, cake, DJ and escort cards all fit a 6 ft table. See our cake, gift and guest book checklist.
  • Kids tables. Two 6 ft tables seat 12 kids with room for coloring. See kids table ideas.

When to pick an 8-foot table

  • Long family-style dinners. One 8 ft table seats 8 comfortably, and you can line up two or three in a row.
  • Buffets. Eight feet gives each chafing dish 2 feet of table, so a four-dish line fits on one table. See buffet table layouts.
  • Large, open rooms. Fewer, longer tables mean fewer cloths and a cleaner floor plan.
  • Backyard parties and tents. 8 ft tables are the standard in tent layouts.

Placing banquet tables together

You can create a longer table by lining tables end to end. Two 8 footers become a 16-foot table that seats 16 to 18. Check three things before you do:

  1. 1Step 1Check the gapTables meet with a seam. A runner or a full cloth hides it.
  2. 2Step 2Check the legsLegs sit inside each end, so seats near a seam may hit a leg.
  3. 3Step 3Check the widthTwo tables side by side make a 60-inch wide block that is too wide for conversation.
  4. 4Step 4Check the aisleLeave at least 4 feet behind chairs.
Check the gap, then Check the legs, then Check the width, then Check the aisle

Seating math for long rows

Guests Using 6 ft tables Using 8 ft tables
16 3 tables (18 seats) 2 tables (16 seats)
24 4 tables 3 tables
40 7 tables 5 tables
64 11 tables 8 tables

An 8 ft table gives each guest 24 inches of edge at 8 seats. A 6 ft table gives each guest 24 inches at 6 seats. That per-person space is the same; the difference is how many tables, cloths and aisles you manage.

Chairs for banquet tables

Rectangular tables put chairs in straight rows, so style shows. A row of cross-back chairs reads as one clean line. Garden folding chairs suit casual picnic setups. If your venue is a rented hall in Chicago, ask whether tables and chairs are in the hall's contract before you add rentals.

Frequently asked questions

How many people sit at a 6-foot banquet table?

A 6-foot banquet table seats 6 comfortably, 3 on each long side. You can fit 8 by seating guests at the ends, but that is tight for a plated meal.

How many people sit at an 8-foot banquet table?

An 8-foot banquet table seats 8 comfortably, 4 per side, and up to 10 with end seats. Allow about 24 inches of table edge per guest.

What size is an 8-foot banquet table?

It is 96 inches long by 30 inches wide and 30 inches tall. A few styles are 24 or 36 inches deep, so confirm with the rental company.

What tablecloth fits a 6-foot banquet table?

A 90 x 132-inch cloth reaches the floor on a 30-inch table. A 60 x 102-inch cloth gives a shorter lap-length drop of about 15 inches.

Are banquet tables the same as folding tables?

Most banquet tables are folding tables with metal or plastic legs, but premium rental tables can have heavier tops. See folding vs heavy wood tables.

Can I use banquet tables for a wedding?

Yes. Many Chicago weddings use banquet tables for head tables, buffets and long-table dinners. Dress them with floor-length linens and a runner to match round tables.
