Square Tables for Dinner Parties: Sizes, Seating and Layout Tips
Square tables for dinner parties: 30, 36 and 48 inch sizes, seats for each, how to combine them and linen sizes for restaurants-style events.

Square tables bring a restaurant feel to an event. They give each group a table of their own, they flex into longer rows and they fit tight corners better than rounds. For a Chicago-area dinner party in a loft, a gallery or a restaurant buyout, they are an underused option.
Square table size chart
| Table | Seats | Floor-length cloth | Lap-length cloth | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24 in square | 2 | 84 in square | 54 in square | Cocktail, intimate |
| 30 in square | 2 to 4 | 90 in square | 60 in square | Bistro seating |
| 36 in square | 4 | 96 in square | 66 in square | Dinner for four |
| 48 in square | 4 to 8 | 108 in square | 78 in square | Shared meals |
| 60 in square | 8 | 120 in square | 90 in square | Large groups |
These cloth sizes follow the same formula as our tablecloth size chart: table size plus twice the drop. Square cloths in all sizes are not always stocked, so ask what is available. Some companies use a round cloth on a square table to save money and add a different look.
Where square tables shine
- Dinner parties of 8 to 40. Mix pairs and groups of four.
- Restaurant-style events. Fundraisers and corporate dinners use squares so groups form their own tables.
- Tight corners. A square fits flush against a wall.
- Flexible parties. Push tables together in rows when speeches start.
Corner seating problem
At a square table, a guest in a corner sits close to the neighbors. That is why a 36-inch square seats 4, not 8. One guest per side is comfortable. Two per side only works at 48 inches or bigger. Check legs too: some squares have corner legs that block knee room.
Combining squares
- 1Step 1Count the guests4 per 36 in table; 2 on each long side when joined.
- 2Step 2Line them upCheck the seam between tops.
- 3Step 3Level the topsFolding legs can differ by a quarter inch.
- 4Step 4Cover the seamwith a runner or a long cloth.
- 5Step 5Leave spacefor servers to reach both sides.
Joined squares form a banquet-style row. Two 48-inch squares make a 96 x 48 table that seats 8 to 10. Compare with banquet tables.
Floor plan numbers
For 40 guests at squares of 4, plan 10 tables. Each table needs about 8 to 10 feet of space square including chairs, so the room needs around 800 to 1,000 square feet before bar and buffet. That is rule-of-thumb math; ask your venue to check against the floor plan.

Chairs for squares
Square tables show chair styles at all four sides. Bentwood chairs feel like a bistro. Wishbone chairs suit a modern dinner. Compare in our chair collection.
A dinner-party floor plan for 32 guests
Say you host 32 guests for a fundraising dinner in a gallery in Chicago's West Loop. You want an intimate restaurant feel and a speaker at the front.
- Pick 36-inch squares at 4 guests each, which makes 8 tables.
- Arrange them in two rows of four with 5 feet between rows, so servers can pass.
- Put the speaker at one end, with the nearest tables 8 feet from the lectern.
- Place a small bar table near the entrance, and a service table near the kitchen door.
- Add one spare table in case of late RSVPs.
If you need a bigger table for a group of six, join two 36-inch squares to make a 72 x 36 rectangle, seating 6 comfortably. Joining squares gives you the flexibility to change your plan after RSVPs close.
Mistakes to avoid
- Squeezing 6 into a 36-inch square. It looks possible on paper and feels crowded at dinner.
- Mixing cloth sizes. A 90-inch cloth on a 36-inch table puddles on the floor. Check the size chart.
- Forgetting corner legs. Some squares have legs at the corners, which blocks guests' knees. Ask about leg style.
- Putting all squares in one block. Break up the room with a mix of sizes to create zones.
