Putting a seven-year-old on a standard adult chair at a 30-inch table is a recipe for a chin at table level, spilled juice and a child who gives up on dinner. Child-size furniture solves that. It also makes the room look charming. This guide covers sizes, counts and layouts for kids sections at weddings, parties and family gatherings in the Chicago area.

These are typical published ranges for children's furniture, not strict standards. Rental companies stock different sets, so confirm what you will receive.

How many kids per table

A rule of thumb is 4 to 6 children at a small kids table, and no more than 8 at a larger round one. Keep tables within reach of an adult, so spills and tantrums get handled quickly.

Which kids go where

Under 3: keep with parents at the adult table. Use high chairs, not kids chairs.

3 to 7: a kids table works well. They like their own space and fit the furniture.

8 to 12: often too big for a kids table and too old to be treated like toddlers. A "tween table" at standard height gives them independence.

Teens: seat with the adults or with cousins at a regular table.

At a wedding, a kids table near the head table or family tables lets parents keep an eye on children. Our guide on kids table wedding ideas covers styling, and the wedding chair rental cost guide helps with budget. Meals can come early, because children rarely wait for a plated dinner.

Table shapes and layout

Round kids tables make conversation easier, because every child can see every other child, and an adult can stand in the middle of a group of tables and reach any of them. Rectangular tables fit better along a wall or in a narrow room and are easier to line up for crafts. Square tables are a good middle ground for four children. Leave at least 3 feet between tables so a server or parent can walk through, and about 4 feet if you expect strollers.

If you are mixing adult and kids tables in one room, put the kids section close to a wall or a corner. That gives it a natural boundary and keeps children away from main walkways, doors and the bar. A small rug under the section also helps contain crayons and dropped food, and it marks the area as the place for children.

Safety and comfort

  • Stability. Choose chairs with wide bases. Avoid wobbly stacking chairs for toddlers.
  • Edges. Rounded edges on tables help.
  • Location. Keep kids tables away from candles, hot food lines and open doors.
  • Weight limits. Child chairs are not for adults; tell teens and parents not to sit on them.
  • Cleanup. Use wipeable surfaces or paper covers for easy cleanup.

Chicago and weather notes

Outdoor kids tables should be on level ground and shaded in July. Soft ground makes small chairs tilt, so use a solid surface or a tent floor. For winter events, keep kids tables away from the entry draft and coat check. See kids party rentals checklist for the whole party plan.

Frequently asked questions

How tall is a kids table?

Most are about 20 to 24 inches tall. Toddler tables are a bit lower and school-age tables a bit higher. Ask your rental company for the exact height.

How many kids fit at a kids table?

Usually 4 to 6, depending on shape and size. A round table at the larger end can seat 8 with tight spacing.

What age is a kids table for?

Roughly 3 to 7 years. Younger children need adult help and a high chair, and older children often prefer a regular table.

Can kids sit at a regular table?

Yes, with a booster seat or cushion for ages 4 to 8. Kids over 8 usually sit fine at standard tables.

Do I need kids chairs or just a kids table?

Both work together. A kids table with adult chairs puts the plate too high, so use the matching small chairs.

Do rental companies offer kids tables?

Many do. Ask whether child-size furniture is available for your date and request it in your quote.
