A selfie station costs less than a staffed photo booth and works without an attendant. Guests shoot with their own phones, so the setup is about making every phone photo look good. That depends on the backdrop, the light and the space, not on expensive gear. This guide helps you build one at a Chicago-area venue and avoid the common problems of glare, queues and wobbly backdrops.

How a selfie station differs from a photo booth

Feature Selfie station Staffed photo booth
Camera Guest phones Booth camera
Attendant Not required Usually included
Space About 6 x 8 ft 8 x 8 ft and up
Power One outlet, for lights One or more outlets
Output Guest photos, hashtag Prints, galleries
Best for Casual crowds, tight budgets Large events, prints

If you want prints or a hosted gallery, see photo booth types. A selfie station is a lighter alternative or an addition.

Backdrop ideas

  1. Floral wall. Artificial greenery or flowers on a panel. Very photogenic, and it hides a plain wall.
  2. Mirror selfie. A full-length mirror with a framed sign. Guests love mirror shots.
  3. Neon or light sign. A phrase in a bright color. It also gives light on faces.
  4. Fabric drape. Velvet, sequin or sheer curtains on a frame. Choose a color that suits your palette.
  5. Balloon arch. Good for parties and showers, but check venue rules and wind outside.
  6. Chicago skyline panel. A custom printed backdrop of the skyline or a local landmark gives a local feel.
  7. Vintage frame or arch. A freestanding gold frame, with guests posing inside.
  8. Bench or settee. Seating makes poses easier. See velvet sofas and settees.

Lighting is the secret

Poor light ruins selfies more than a plain backdrop. Follow a few rules.

  • Front light, soft. Place a ring light or two softboxes in front of guests, slightly above eye level.
  • No backlight. Do not put the station in front of a bright window, a spotlight or a stage light.
  • Even, warm tone. Mixed colors from nearby fixtures cause odd skin tones. Aim for one warm-white source.
  • Avoid harsh overhead. Strong top light creates shadows under eyes.
  • Use the venue's dimmers. In a dark ballroom, add light to the station without brightening the whole room.

For power and outlets, see photo booth space and power needs, which applies to any lit station.

Top-down selfie station plan with backdrop, lights and floor mark A 6 by 8 foot area with a backdrop against the wall, two softbox lights angled from the front corners, a floor mark where guests stand 4 feet from the backdrop and a prop table at the side. Props and extras

  • Props. Fewer is better: signs, frames, hats and sunglasses. A basket keeps them tidy.
  • Sign with a hashtag or QR code for sharing photos to a shared album.
  • Wipes and a mirror for last-minute touch-ups.
  • A small bench or stool for poses. A ghost chair or a velvet chair works as a prop.
  • Charging station. A power strip for phones keeps guests happy.

Placement at your event

Choose a spot near the cocktail area, with some room for a line, away from the bar and the restrooms. Avoid doorways and glass walls. For outdoor events, shade matters for phone screens and faces, and anything tall needs weighted bases against wind. See market umbrellas for shade.

Frequently asked questions

How much space does a selfie station need?

About 6 by 8 feet, plus room for a line. A mirror or a small bench takes a bit more.

What lighting works best for selfies?

Soft front light from a ring light or two softboxes, slightly above eye level. Avoid backlighting and harsh overhead light.

Do I need an attendant?

No, but a helper who restocks props and tidies helps. A sign explains how to use it.

What backdrop is most photogenic?

Floral walls, neon signs and mirrors are popular, and a simple solid color works too. Choose a texture that reads on a phone.

Can I set up a selfie station outside?

Yes, with shade, a stable base and weights for wind. Direct sun creates harsh shadows.

How do guests share photos?

A sign with a hashtag or a QR code for a shared album works. Test it before the event.
