Balloon Garland: Rent, Hire or DIY? Sizes and Costs
Compare renting a frame, hiring a balloon artist or doing a DIY balloon garland. Learn lengths for tables, backdrops and arches plus weather limits.

A balloon garland is a long, organic line of balloons in mixed sizes, usually tied to a frame or tape. Rentals and installs have become common for birthdays, baby showers, graduations and quinceaneras around Chicago. The question is whether to rent or install, buy and DIY, and how long a garland you actually need.
Rent, hire or DIY?
| Option | What you get | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY kit | Balloons, tape or string, you do the work | Small garlands, tight budgets | Time, tied fingers, uneven look |
| Balloon artist install | Designed and installed on site | Weddings, large backdrops | Needs lead time |
| Frame rental | Metal arch or stand only | Pairing with your own balloons | Balloons still needed |
| Foam or fabric garland | Reusable alternative | Eco-friendly events | Fewer color choices |
The actual cost depends on length, balloon count, colors, delivery and install. We do not publish prices for balloons, so request a quote from the balloon artist or rental company.

A rule many balloon artists use is that a 5-foot garland takes around 100 to 150 balloons in a mix of sizes, but this varies with style, so ask for a count in your quote.
Weather and venue limits
Balloons hate heat and wind. Direct sun can make latex pop or fade, and cold can shrink it. In Chicago summer afternoons, an outdoor garland may need shade. In winter, balloons moved from a cold truck into a warm room expand and can pop. Many venues restrict balloons or helium, and parks may ban them for environmental or safety reasons. Never release balloons outdoors, since loose balloons become litter and can harm wildlife, and check with your venue and local park district about their rules.
Setup timeline

- 2Step 2Choose colorsthat match linens and flowers.
- 3Step 3Confirm venue ruleson balloons, helium, tape and ladders.
- 4Step 4Install on the dayas close to the event as possible.
- 5Step 5Plan the pop and cleanupafter the event.
DIY tips if you go that route
Use a strip or a fishing line base, inflate balloons to varied sizes with a pump, and cluster them in fours before attaching. Start from the center and work out. Allow a full evening. Buy extra of each size because some will pop. If you plan a large arch, build the frame first and test it in the room where it will stand.
Eco and alternatives
Latex is biodegradable, but foil balloons are not, and loose balloons can harm wildlife. Many venues prefer garlands that stay inside. Paper, fabric and foam alternatives are reusable. A flower wall or pipe and drape can give a similar backdrop without balloons.
Seating for parties
For kids and birthday parties, see our chair choices: the garden folding chair is affordable and light, while a shell chair feels more modern.
Mistakes to avoid
- Installing hours early in a hot room.
- Ordering a garland shorter than the backdrop.
- Using tape the venue forbids.
- Releasing balloons outside.
