Anniversary parties are quieter than weddings and more personal. The guest list is the people who were there the first time, the family that grew from it and friends who know the story. That shapes the rental list: comfortable seating, tables where multi-generational families can talk, and one corner that tells the story of the couple.

What to rent

Seating

Anniversaries often bring older guests, so choose chairs for comfort. A padded seat or a firm back matters over a two-hour dinner. Velvet dining chairs (estimated $18 to $25) feel special for a head table, and cross-back chairs (about $8 to $11) are a relaxed choice for guest tables. For a garden setting, see garden folding chairs, estimated at $5 to $7 each.

Tables

  • Round tables of 8 on 60 inches or 10 on 72 inches. Our round table size guide explains the difference.
  • A small round or 6-foot rectangle for the couple.
  • Display tables: one for photos, one for cards and gifts, one for cake.

Linens and napkins

Floor-length linens in ivory, blush or sage feel classic. Match napkin colors to the milestone: silver for a 25th, gold for a 50th are the traditional anniversary colors. See the tablecloth size chart so the sizes fit.

Sound and display

A microphone for toasts, a screen or a simple photo easel. Leave a clear line from every table to the speaker.

Guests Chairs Rounds of 10 Display tables Dance floor
40 40 4 2 9 x 9 ft
80 80 8 3 12 x 12 ft
120 120 12 3 to 4 15 x 15 ft

If you are using 60-inch rounds seating 8, divide guests by 8 instead and round up.

Vow renewals add a ceremony

If you are renewing vows, add rows of chairs facing a simple arch or table, then convert the room to dinner. Read ceremony vs reception chairs for how to reuse them, and plan 15 to 20 minutes to flip the room if the ceremony and dinner are in the same space.

Chicago-area notes

Many Chicago families hold anniversary parties in banquet halls, restaurants and church halls, and some at home in the backyard. At a hall, check which tables, chairs and linens are included, and whether you can bring your own. For backyard parties, look at what size tent you need and plan an indoor backup for storms. Older guests often need a clear route from the car, so ask about drop-off spots and keep walkways free of cords.

Frequently asked questions

How many chairs do I need for an anniversary party?

One chair per guest for a seated dinner, plus a few spares. For 80 guests, rent about 80 to 84 chairs.

What is the best layout for a 50th anniversary party?

A seated dinner with round tables, a table for the couple and a clear sightline to a toast area. Add a photo display near the entrance and a dance floor for the first dance.

Should the couple sit at a head table?

It is a choice. A small table for two, a sweetheart style, makes them the center. A table with their children and grandchildren feels warmer. Either is fine.

What colors work for a silver or golden anniversary?

Silver and white for a 25th, gold and ivory for a 50th. Use them in napkins, chargers or candles rather than full table coverage to avoid a harsh look.

How long should an anniversary party last?

Three to four hours. That's enough for arrival, dinner, a toast, cake and a bit of dancing without tiring older guests.

Do I need a dance floor?

Only if there will be dancing. If just the couple will dance, a small 9 x 9-foot floor is plenty. See dance floor size by guest count.
