The reveal itself lasts seconds. The party lasts two hours. A good setup gives guests somewhere to mingle and eat before, the best view for the moment itself, and a way to keep the energy going after the surprise.

Put the sightline first

Draw the reveal area first and plan the rest of the party around it. Whether you cut a cake, open a box of balloons or pop a confetti cannon, guests need to see the couple's faces and the color at the same time.

Three curved rows keep the front rows low and the back rows standing, so everyone can see the reveal.

Seating that works for a short moment

Not everyone needs a chair for the entire party. Plan roughly 60 to 70 percent seating, and put chairs in the front rows for older relatives and expecting parents. Kids and friends can stand or sit on the grass at the front.

  • Front rows (chairs): 12 to 16 chairs, set in curved rows.
  • Back rows (standing): leave open space behind the chairs.
  • Tables: a few rounds of 6 to 8 for guests who want to eat sitting down.

For lawn or sand, garden folding chairs at $5 to $7 are easy to move. Rattan garden chairs add a soft look to photos. Chair counts for the whole day can follow how many chairs you need.

Choose a reveal that fits your yard and village

Reveal style Space needed Watch out for
Cake cut A table, no extra Needs a clear view from every seat
Balloon box or piñata 10 ft clear Wind and balloons drifting away
Confetti cannon 15 ft clear Cleanup, and wind; check venue rules
Smoke or powder 20 ft clear Open space; many parks and venues restrict it
Fireworks or flares Not recommended Local laws and fire risk; check your village before planning

Rules about fireworks, smoke, open flame and confetti vary by village, park district and venue. Check before you buy anything, and have a cake or balloon reveal as your backup.

Chicago-area notes

Many Chicago families hold reveals in backyards, parks or party rooms. For a park, ask the park district about permits, alcohol rules, balloon and confetti rules, and whether you need a reservation for a shelter. For a backyard, tell neighbors. In late spring and summer Chicago has afternoon thunderstorms, so keep a tent or indoor plan ready. Check the forecast a few days ahead and keep the plan flexible.

Make the rest of the party easy

Most of the party is regular socializing, so keep the rest simple. Serve food that can sit out, like finger sandwiches, fruit and a cake, and put drinks in a tub with ice so no one has to stand in line. Add a few games on a table for kids, and a guess board for guests to predict the outcome before the reveal. Place a basket of small blankets or fans near the seating, depending on the season.

A small thing that helps: tell a friend to be the photographer and the person who cues the reveal. The parents-to-be should not be running the logistics at the key moment. Give that person a copy of the timeline and a phone with the playlist ready.

After the reveal, expect a rush of hugs and photos. Leave an open space of about 10 by 10 feet by the reveal spot so the family can gather without trampling a table. Then let guests move back to the food and seats, and serve cake within 20 minutes so the energy carries on.

Frequently asked questions

How many chairs do I need for a gender reveal?

Plan about 60 to 70 percent of guests in chairs. For a 40-guest party, rent 24 to 28, with extra standing room at the back.

Where should guests stand or sit for the reveal?

In a semicircle 10 to 20 feet from the reveal spot, with chairs in the front for older guests and parents and standing room behind.

Is it safe to use fireworks or smoke for a reveal?

It depends on local rules and weather. Many villages and parks restrict fireworks, smoke and open flame, so check first. A cake or balloon reveal avoids the question.

How long does a gender reveal party last?

Two hours is typical: 30 minutes to arrive, the reveal about 45 minutes in, then food, photos and cake.

Should I rent a tent?

If you're outdoors, yes. It protects food, keeps guests in shade and gives you a backup for rain. See what size tent you need.

What time of day is best for photos?

Late afternoon, before sunset, gives soft light. Avoid noon, when shadows are harsh, and consider where the sun will be behind the reveal spot.
