Valentine's Day Dinner Party at Home: Tables for 8 to 16
Host a couples dinner party at home on Valentine's Day with table layouts for 8 to 16 guests, linens, candles, place settings and lighting that works.

Restaurants are packed on Valentine's Day. A dinner party at home with a few other couples gives you a quiet table, a menu you pick and no wait for a reservation. In 2027, February 14 is a Sunday, which makes a long dinner easy to plan, but it also means a Monday morning for everyone. The rest is table size, lighting and a clean flow from the first drink to dessert.
Pick the table for your group
| Guests | Table setup | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | One 6-foot or 8-foot table, or a 72-inch round | 4 couples |
| 10 to 12 | One long 10-foot setup, or one 72-inch round plus a small table | Easiest to talk across |
| 14 to 16 | Two 60-inch rounds plus extra, or two 8-foot tables | Mix couples at each table |
Remember the rule of thumb of 24 inches per person. If your dining room only fits 6, a rented table may fit better than moving furniture. See our guide to dinner parties for 12 to 24 for layouts.
Linens, candles and place settings
- Linens. A floor-length cloth or a neutral runner over a bare table. Deep red, ivory and blush work for the date. The tablecloth size chart helps you pick the right size.
- Candles. Low candles in holders keep sight lines clear. Avoid tall tapers that block faces across the table. Use battery candles if you want no flame, and keep real flames away from napkins and florals. See candle rules and fire safety.
- Place settings. A dinner plate, a smaller plate for salad or dessert, a fork on the left, a knife and spoon on the right, a water glass and a wine glass. For the full order, see place setting spacing.
- Glassware. Count a water glass, a red and a white wine glass, or a flute for a toast. See how many glasses per guest.
- Dinnerware. If you do not own 12 matching plates, rent them. See dinnerware for a dinner party at home.
Lighting for the evening
Light makes the room. February sunsets in Chicago come early, so you will be eating in the dark from the start.
- 1Step 1Turn off overhead lightsUse lamps, string lights or a dimmer.
- 2Step 2Put the brightest light on the foodA small lamp on a sideboard works.
- 3Step 3Add candles lastPlace them down the center, low and spaced about 12 inches apart.
- 4Step 4Keep it warmChoose warm white bulbs, since cool bulbs look flat.
- 5Step 5Check facesSit in each seat and see that no one looks lit from below.
See lighting color temperature for bulb choices.
Chairs for a long dinner
A dining chair that is fine for 20 minutes can be tiring after two hours. Pick padded or well-shaped chairs, and leave about 18 inches between the table edge and the wall or the next chair. See comfortable chairs for older guests for what to look for, or browse chairs.

Keep the menu to three courses at most, or a family-style main with two sides. A pre-set table helps, since you can serve soup or salad at the seat. Ask about allergies when you invite people.
What most hosts find out too late
- Valentine's weekend sells out. Rental companies get busy near Feb 14, and Sunday pickups may be limited. Book early and ask about delivery and pickup times.
- Measure the room. A 10-foot table in a 10-foot room leaves no walking space. Leave at least 36 inches around the table.
- Count everything at delivery. Check plates, glasses and chairs against the quote.
- Check your heat. A crowded room gets warm. Turn the heat down a bit before guests arrive.
