Protecting Floors at a Home Party With Rental Chairs and Tables
How to keep hardwood, tile and carpet safe from rental chairs and tables, with felt pads, glides, runners and a plan for who pays for scratches.

A house or condo party in Chicago means chairs on hardwood, tables in a living room and a crowd that scoots back. Floors in older greystones, bungalows and two-flats are often original hardwood, and a few hundred pounds of furniture moves around a lot in one night. A few cheap steps save the floor.
Which floor needs what
Felt pads and glides
Felt pads and plastic glides spread the weight and slide instead of scratching. They work best on furniture you own. Rental chairs are different: companies usually do not want stickers or adhesive on their items, and sticky residue can mean a cleaning charge. Ask first. If pads are not allowed, protect the floor instead of the chair:
- Lay a runner or rug along the paths and under the dining area.
- Use area rugs with a grip pad under each table.
- Add cardboard or a thin tarp under a bar, buffet or heavy table where it sits.
- Keep chair seating on rugs where guests will scoot most.
A chair on a runner moves on the runner, not the floor.
Moving heavy pieces
| Piece | How to move it |
|---|---|
| Folding table | Two people, carried, legs folded |
| Round table | On edge, rolled slowly, or carried flat |
| Stack of chairs | A few at a time, not dragged |
| Heater, cooler, bar | Cart with soft wheels, or a blanket under it |
| Furniture you are clearing out | Slide on blankets or furniture sliders, not bare feet |
Anything that has to move across the floor can go on a blanket or a furniture slider. Clear the room before the crew arrives so they are not weaving around your couch. See setup and breakdown for what a crew does and does not do.
What most hosts find out too late
Scratches usually belong to the person who owns the floor. Rental companies cover item damage through the waiver, not your floor. See damage waivers. If you rent, your lease and security deposit are what count, and a landlord or condo board may have rules about delivery and floor protection. Ask before the date.
Wet shoes are a bigger enemy than chairs in winter. Slush, salt and grit grind into hardwood. Put mats at the door and a shoe area, and see winter delivery for the delivery side.
A dolly or cart can leave marks too. Ask the crew to lay a runner where carts roll, or to carry over the floor.

Who pays for damage
- A scuffed rental chair: the rental company, or you, depending on your waiver.
- A scratched floor in your own home: you, unless a guest or contractor caused it and you can get them to pay.
- A scratched floor in a rental unit: you, through your security deposit or lease terms.
- A scratched venue floor: you, under the venue contract.
