Not every event needs linens and chargers. A graduation party in a Naperville backyard or a company picnic in a forest preserve pavilion runs best with sturdy tables, benches and shade. Picnic tables are the easy answer, with a few details that decide whether guests are comfortable.

Picnic table sizes and seating

Table Seats Footprint with benches Best for
6 ft picnic 6 to 8 About 6 x 5 ft Small family groups
8 ft picnic 8 to 10 About 8 x 5 ft Party and picnic rows
Round picnic 6 to 8 About 6 ft diameter Playgrounds, camps
Banquet + folding chairs 8 30 in x 8 ft Casual but flexible

Footprints are approximate, since picnic table designs vary. Ask the rental company whether benches are attached, and how wide the overall set is.

When picnic tables work

  • Graduation parties and backyard events. Benches handle a big crowd quickly.
  • Company picnics. Employees and kids sit anywhere, with no assigned seats.
  • Block parties and festivals. Sturdy tables handle spills and weather.
  • Cookouts. Easy cleaning matters.

They are not ideal for elderly guests, tiny children or formal dinners. Benches have no back, and getting in and out is harder than with a chair.

Add chairs for comfort

Mix in some chairs at the end of each table, so older guests can sit more comfortably. Folding chairs work for this; a garden folding chair is light, easy to move and priced for casual events. See our seasons and venues guides too.

Ground and weather

A picnic table that rocks spills drinks. Place tables on level, firm ground, and use shims if a leg is short. Grass in spring can be soft after rain, and Chicago summers bring thunderstorms, so a tent or pavilion is smart. See table rental for outdoor events. For a pavilion or park district shelter, check the permit rules with your park district; they often set the number of tables included.

Setup ideas

  • Paper table covers. Roll out butcher paper and add crayons for kids.
  • Plastic or gingham cloths. Clip them down with table clamps.
  • Centerpieces. A mason jar of flowers or a bucket of condiments.
  • Trash and recycling stations. One for every 3 tables.
  • Bug control. Citronella candles or fans.

Rows, groups or a U?

Rows make setup fast. A U-shape around a lawn or a stage keeps everyone facing the activity. Groups of 3 tables create zones for kids and adults. Keep food tables apart from seating so the line does not block diners.

Costs and logistics

We do not list table prices yet. Costs depend on table type, delivery distance, setup and pickup, and how many hours you need them. Ask for a quote that includes delivery and a pick-up time, and confirm access for a truck at your site.

Planning a 60-guest graduation party

A family hosts a graduation open house for 60 guests in a suburban backyard in June, with a tent for the food and shade.

  1. Seats: 60 guests at 8 per table is 8 picnic tables, but not everyone sits at once, so 6 tables plus 15 folding chairs works for an open-house flow.
  2. Layout: two rows of three tables under or beside the tent, 6 feet apart.
  3. Food: a separate 8-foot banquet table for the buffet, with a cooler table for drinks.
  4. Extras: a gift table, a photo table for memorabilia, and a trash station at each end.
  5. Shade: place tables on the east side of the house for afternoon shade.

Keep the pathways open to the house and restrooms, and give kids a spot at a table close to the lawn. If rain is in the forecast, ask your tent company about sidewalls and your rental company about pickup timing so tables are not left in the weather.

Cleaning and pickup

Rental tables return to the company clean, so wipe spills and scrape gum. Ask whether the rental includes pickup the next morning or the same night, and clear a path for the truck.

Frequently asked questions

How many people sit at a picnic table?

A 6-foot picnic table seats 6 to 8 and an 8-foot table seats 8 to 10, depending on bench design.

How many picnic tables do I need?

One 8-foot table per 8 to 10 guests, plus a few extra for food and drinks.

Can picnic tables go on grass?

Yes, if the ground is level and firm. Use shims or boards under legs if needed.

How far apart should picnic tables be?

5 to 6 feet between tables, so guests and strollers pass between benches.

Do I need a tent for picnic tables?

Not required, but shade and rain protection matter in summer. Plan a tent or pavilion.

Are picnic tables comfortable for elders?

Benches without backs are harder. Add some chairs at the ends.
