Holiday Party at Home: Rentals, Layout and a Winter Plan for Chicago
Host a holiday party at home for 30 to 60 with the right chairs, tables, coat storage and bar setup. A Chicago winter plan with layouts and a rentals checklist.

Holiday parties in a Chicago-area home have three problems at once: too many people for the furniture, too many coats for the closet, and weather that makes any outdoor overflow a bad idea. A small rental order handles all three. The trick is knowing where each piece goes before it arrives.
Start with the coats
In December every guest brings a coat, a hat and often boots. For 40 guests that is 40 coats, which will not fit in a hall closet. Plan for it.
A rolling garment rack holds a set number of hangers, so check the capacity when you order and add a second rack if you need it. A boot tray and a mat keep wet shoes from the hardwood. A spare bedroom with a bed works as a backup, but a rack by the door keeps traffic out of that room.
What to rent
| Item | 30 guests | 40 guests | 60 guests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chairs | 12 to 15 | 18 to 22 | 28 to 32 |
| Cocktail tables (42 in) | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| Buffet tables | 1 × 8 ft | 1 to 2 × 8 ft | 2 × 8 ft |
| Bar table | 1 × 6 ft | 1 × 6 ft | 1 × 8 ft |
| Coat rack | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Glasses (3 per guest) | 90 | 120 | 180 |
Three glasses per guest is a common starting point for a party with wine and a signature drink. See how many glasses per guest for more detail.
Chairs
Pick chairs that blend into a living room. Ghost chairs, about $10 to $14, take up little visual space. Velvet dining chairs, about $18 to $25, add color for an upscale party. Cross-back chairs, about $8 to $11, suit a warm, rustic holiday look.
Food and bar
Hot food needs chafing dishes and a way to keep them warm. See how many chafing dishes you need. Set the bar in a different room from the food. If you want a hot cocoa or coffee corner, check how many coffee urns.

Chicago notes
Chicago winters can bring snow and ice, which affects delivery times and walkways. Tell the rental company if your driveway is steep or your street has parking restrictions, and clear a path for the truck. In the city, check the parking rules on your block, and in the suburbs ask your village about overnight parking. If you plan to use a tent for overflow, check heating and clearances; our heating guide covers the basics. For string lights and candles, see string light layouts.
Set the mood without clutter
Holiday parties are decorated already: a tree, garlands, candles, a mantel. Rentals should stay quiet so the decor stands out. Choose neutral linens, such as white, ivory or deep green, and let your own ornaments do the talking. Keep the buffet simple, with a tablecloth that reaches the floor, and use cake stands and risers rather than extra tables.
Lighting matters in December, when it gets dark before 5 p.m. Dim overhead lights, add lamps and candles in safe holders, and avoid open flames near garlands. Battery candles are fine near trees.
Music should sit below conversation. A playlist set up before guests arrive saves you from fiddling with a phone all evening.
