A vow renewal is a party for people who already know each other well. It marks an anniversary, a recovery, a move or just a reason to gather. There is no pressure to follow a wedding script, so the rental list can follow how you want the day to feel: a backyard lunch for 30, a restaurant dinner for 60 or a hall party for 100.

Choose the shape of the day

Three vow renewal formats and what each needs Three cards. Backyard lunch: 30 guests, folding chairs, long tables, lap linens. Restaurant dinner: 60 guests, venue chairs, a few rentals. Hall party: 100 guests, full chairs, tables, linens, dinnerware. The venue decides how much you rent, not the occasion.

The ceremony

Vow renewals are short, often 10 to 20 minutes. A simple layout works.

  • Chairs: one per guest. A circle or horseshoe around the couple feels intimate for under 50. For larger groups, two blocks with a short aisle. See ceremony seating layouts.
  • Focal point: an arch, a pair of plants or a decorated table.
  • Seats for the couple: some couples sit for the vows; add two comfortable chairs, such as velvet dining chairs, at the front.
  • Sound: a microphone for 40 or more guests.

If the ceremony and dinner share a room, see ceremony vs reception chairs.

The dinner

Tables. Rounds of 8 or 10 make mixing easy; long tables fit family-style meals. For 60 guests, 7 or 8 rounds of 8. Use our table count guide.

Chairs. A warm wood chair like the cane-back or cross-back feels celebratory and relaxed. For older guests, pick chairs with a supportive seat and arms where possible; browse the chair collection.

Linens. Lap-length cloths with a runner and cloth napkins feel casual but finished. A single accent color, such as the couple's anniversary color, ties the room together.

Dinnerware. Real plates and glasses cost little at this size and add a lot. See dinnerware sizes.

What to skip

  • A full chuppah or large arch unless you want one.
  • Matching bridal party chairs.
  • A formal head table; a sweetheart table or a simple seat of honor is fine.
  • Excess favors; a note or a toast is enough.

Making it personal

Mixed seating is a feature at a vow renewal. If the couple has been together for decades, the guests include grandkids and old friends, and comfort matters more than style. Provide a few cushioned chairs, a ramp or flat path for mobility devices and shade or heat depending on the season. A photo table with pictures from the original wedding costs a table and a cloth and gets the most attention of any decor.

Accessibility and comfort

Vow renewals often include guests in their 70s and 80s, and a few small decisions make the day easier for them. Keep the path from parking to the seats short and level. Put a few chairs with arms at the end of rows. Set the dinner tables with enough room between chairs for walkers, which means 5 feet between table edges rather than 4. Provide shade or warmth and a quiet place to sit away from the music. These cost little and guests remember them.

Think about the couple's own comfort too. If you will stand for photos and greeting guests, plan a place to sit between moments, like a pair of upholstered chairs near the entrance. That small spot also gives guests a natural place to come and say hello.

Chicago-area timing

Anniversaries cluster in the same months as weddings, so spring, summer and early fall weekends fill up. Weekday and Sunday dates are easier to book and can be cheaper at venues. A winter vow renewal in a restaurant or hall avoids the weather risk, though coat racks help; see our winter seating guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a ceremony setup for a vow renewal?

Not always. Some couples renew vows at the dinner table, with a toast. If you want a short ceremony, a handful of chairs and a focal point is enough.

How many chairs do I need?

One for each guest plus two spares. If you hold the ceremony and dinner in different spaces, plan chairs for each, or flip them.

Can I use a casual look?

Yes. Vow renewals are less formal than weddings, so lap-length linens, mixed wood chairs and family-style plates suit them.

What is the typical guest list?

It varies from a dozen family members to 100 or more. Many couples invite those who attended the first wedding plus close friends.

Who hosts and pays?

Usually the couple, sometimes their children. Decide early because it affects venue and rental choices.

How far ahead should I book rentals?

Two to three weeks is workable for small events, but spring and fall weekends fill up faster. Book as soon as the date and venue are set.
