Chicago gives outdoor hosts gorgeous summer evenings and very little predictability. Here's how to plan your chairs so the weather doesn't plan them for you.

Chairs on grass: avoid sinking and wobbling

Thin metal legs act like tent stakes on a soft lawn, especially after rain. Guests end up leaning back as the rear legs sink. Better choices:

  • Chairs with a wider footprint, like a teak garden folding chair or a cross-back
  • Firm ground first. Walk the lawn and avoid low spots where water collects
  • Level before guests arrive. Ask your crew to check each row after setup

If your ceremony is on a lawn and dinner is on a patio or under a tent, you can use a lighter outdoor chair for the ceremony and a styled chair for the reception.

Rain: decide your backup before you book

Ask your rental company what happens if it rains before you sign:

  • Can chairs be set late, or moved under a tent quickly?
  • Which finishes can be wiped down, and which must stay dry?
  • Who decides on the morning of, and by what time?

Upholstered and velvet chairs belong indoors or under a tent with sidewalls. Wood, resin and acrylic handle a passing shower better but still need wiping before anyone sits.

Wind: the lake isn't kidding

Lighter chairs like acrylic ghost chairs can shift in strong gusts on open lawns and rooftops. On a windy site, favor heavier wood chairs, keep them out of exposed corners and confirm whether your tent requires sidewalls.

Heat and sun

  • Shade the ceremony. Guests sit still, often facing the sun
  • Lighter finishes stay cooler to the touch than dark wood or black metal
  • Peak summer Saturdays book early, so lock in specialty styles months ahead

Fall and winter outdoor moments

Fall evenings cool quickly once the sun drops. Throws draped over chair backs look beautiful and get used. For winter, most Chicago events move indoors or into heated tents, where any style works. Padded and velvet seats feel warmest.

Frequently asked questions

What chairs are best for an outdoor event on grass?

Chairs with wide, flat feet or a full base, such as garden folding or cross-back chairs, sink less than chairs with thin metal legs. Set them on firm ground and level each row.

Can rental chairs get wet?

Wood, resin and acrylic chairs can usually handle a light shower if wiped down before guests sit. Upholstered chairs should stay dry, so keep them under a tent or indoors.

Do I need a permit for an outdoor event in a Chicago park?

Events in Chicago Park District parks generally need a permit from the Park District. Requirements vary by park and event size, so check with them directly before booking rentals.
