A garden party has a particular feel: long afternoon, lots of conversation, maybe a lawn game in the corner. The chairs should look like they belong to a garden and not like they were trucked in. Rattan does that. The challenge in the Chicago area is weather, because a garden party in May or September can swing from 80 degrees and humid to cool and damp in a week. This guide explains how to make rattan work, and when to pick something else.

What makes rattan different

Rattan is a natural vine, woven over a frame. The weave gives you texture, which photographs well against linen, greenery and glass. Our rattan garden chair comes in honey and white wash, has a sturdy frame and can take an optional seat cushion.

Three things to know before you order:

  • It does not stack. Each chair takes its own floor space in the truck and in storage, which changes delivery planning.
  • It is lighter than wood but not delicate. Guests can move it easily, which is good for a mingling party and bad if you want a fixed layout.
  • Weave catches things. Heels, hems and necklaces can snag, so avoid placing chairs at the edge of a dance area.

A garden party layout that works

A typical afternoon garden party has three zones: arrival drinks, dinner or a long brunch table, and a quiet corner. Rattan works in all three.

A conversation cluster of 4 chairs around a low table sits to the left, and a pair of chairs near the bar sits to the right. A 36-inch path surrounds the dinner table. Rattan chairs work as dinner seating and as loose lounge groups in the same garden.

For the dinner zone, plan about 24 inches of table edge per guest and 36 inches of clear walkway around the table. That clearance matters more with non-stacking chairs because they are bulkier to push back.

Weather and ground

Rattan is a natural material. Rain will not ruin a rental chair in a short shower, but it should not sit wet for hours or stand in a puddle. Humidity makes the weave swell a little and is normal. Direct, strong sun can fade the honey tone over many seasons, but it is not a one-event concern.

  1. 1Step 1Is the ground firm and dry?If yes, place chairs on it. If no, use flooring or a hard patio.
  2. 2Step 2Is there rain in the forecast?A tent or covered porch protects the weave.
  3. 3Step 3Is it hot and sunny?Add shade and set chairs late so the cushions stay cool.
  4. 4Step 4Are guests in heels?Choose the tent or patio, not the lawn.
  5. 5Step 5Is the event over two hours?Add cushions.

What to pair with rattan

The chair brings warmth and texture, so keep the rest simple:

  • Tables: long wood farm tables, round tables with natural linen, or low coffee tables for the lounge corner.
  • Colors: terracotta, sage, ivory and warm yellow. Avoid cool-toned neon.
  • Details: pampas grass, dried florals, mismatched glassware and cloth napkins.

Bridal shower for 40 40 Optional White wash
Cocktail party for 80 20 to 30 lounge seats Optional Honey

Rattan versus cane-back

People often confuse rattan and cane. Rattan is the woven frame or seat. Cane is a flat, open weave panel, as on our cane-back chair. The cane-back reads as more formal and vintage, while rattan feels more relaxed. If you cannot decide, read cane-back chairs for weddings.

Cost and quantity

At an estimated $12 to $16 per chair, rattan is a mid-priced option. Because the chairs do not stack, delivery and labor can be a larger part of the quote than with a stackable chair. Ask for a quote that includes delivery, stairs and setup.

Frequently asked questions

Can rattan chairs go outside?

Yes. Ours is outdoor-friendly, but it should sit on a firm, dry surface and be protected from long rain. A tent or covered patio is ideal.

How much do rattan chairs cost to rent in Chicago?

Our estimate is $12 to $16 per chair. Final pricing depends on quantity, delivery address and setup needs.

Are rattan chairs comfortable?

They are comfortable for casual events, and a cushion helps for anything over an hour. The woven back has a little give, which many guests prefer to a hard wood back.

Do rattan chairs stack?

No. Plan extra floor space for delivery and storage, and ask your venue where chairs can wait before setup.

What colors go with rattan chairs?

Terracotta, sage, cream, rust, blush and natural greens all work. They look strongest against linen and wood rather than glossy or neon surfaces.

Will rattan chairs snag a dress?

Occasionally, especially a delicate fabric or beading. For a formal event, choose a smooth chair such as the velvet or Louis, or keep rattan for the lounge and cocktail areas.

How many rattan chairs should I order for a garden party?

Order one seat per guest at a seated meal, or about 30 to 40 percent of your guest count if the party is cocktail style. That ratio is a rule of thumb, so adjust for older guests.
