Friendsgiving for 20: Tables, Chairs and a Buffet That Works
Host Friendsgiving for 20 with a long-table layout, buffet flow, kids table and the rentals you need. Counts for 12 to 30 guests and a Chicago November plan.

Friendsgiving is a potluck that grew up. It started as a dinner among friends who couldn't get home, and now it's a full meal with 15 to 30 people, a long table, and a fridge that is somehow always out of room. The real constraint is space: where do the dishes go, where do the people sit, and how do you keep a traffic jam from forming around the mashed potatoes.
Separate the food from the seats
At a family Thanksgiving, dishes go on the table. At a Friendsgiving of 20, there isn't room. Put the food on its own table and let people carry plates to their seats.
What to rent
Tables
- Dinner table: two 8-foot banquet tables, end to end. With 5 seats on each long side and one at each end, that seats 12; for 20, use a long table of 3 sections (24 feet) or two parallel tables.
- Buffet: one or two 6- or 8-foot tables for hot dishes, with room for 8 to 12 dishes per table.
- Drinks and dessert: one smaller table each.
See how many tables for 50 to 200 guests for scaling up, and banquet table sizes.
Chairs
Mixed chairs are part of the Friendsgiving look, so don't worry about matching. Cross-back chairs, estimated $8 to $11, are warm and wood-toned. Windsor chairs feel like a farmhouse. Bentwood chairs are light. Use your own chairs where you can and rent the rest.
Linens
Natural linen, burlap or a plain runner on a wood table suits a fall palette. Colors that photograph well: rust, olive, cream, deep burgundy. For sizes, see the tablecloth size chart.
Dishes and serving
Potluck means every dish needs a serving utensil, and you'll run short of platters. Count 1 serving spoon for each dish, plus a second for the turkey and gravy. For plates, glasses and flatware by guest count, see how many plates per guest.
Counts by group size
| Guests | Chairs | Dinner table | Buffet | Plates (2 per guest) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 | 12 | 1 × 8 ft plus extension | 1 × 6 ft | 24 |
| 20 | 20 | 2 × 8 ft long, or 2 rounds of 10 | 1 to 2 × 8 ft | 40 |
| 30 | 30 | 3 rounds of 10 | 2 × 8 ft | 60 |
The 2-plates-per-guest count allows for seconds and dessert. Add a few extra for kids and spills.

The kids table
Put kids at their own table within sight of the adults. A 48-inch round seats 6 kids, and a 6-foot rectangle seats 6 to 8. Give them paper tablecloths and crayons. Seat a teen at the table as the captain.
Chicago-area notes
November in the Chicago area can bring cold snaps, early darkness and snow, so indoor space matters. If you plan to use a garage or a heated tent, check your village's rules. Sunset comes before 5 p.m. in late November, so plan lighting from the start. Our guide to backyard lighting covers candles and string lights, and for heating, check the manufacturer's clearances. Also tell guests where to park, since a 20-person party can fill a block.
