Chuppah and Mandap Decor: Sizes, Setup and Venue Rules
Plan the decor side of a chuppah or mandap: typical sizes, posts, fabric and florals, safety and venue questions. Customs come from your officiant.

A chuppah is the canopy used in a Jewish wedding ceremony, and a mandap is the covered platform used in many Hindu and other South Asian weddings. Both are structures that define the ceremony space, and both are a large part of the ceremony photos. This guide is about the decor and rental side: size, setup, materials and logistics for a Chicago-area ceremony. The meaning, rules and customs belong to your family, rabbi, priest or pandit, so ask them first about what is required.
Structure first, decor second
Both structures usually stand on four posts with a fabric or floral top. A chuppah is often open on all sides and may be freestanding or held by four people. A mandap often has four pillars, steps or a raised platform, and room inside for the couple, officiant and family members. Customs vary by community, family and region, so confirm what your officiant expects before you rent anything.
| Feature | Chuppah | Mandap |
|---|---|---|
| Posts | Four, freestanding or held | Four pillars, often fixed |
| Footprint | Often 6 x 6 ft or larger | Often 8 x 8 ft to 10 x 10 ft or larger |
| Top | Fabric, tallit or floral | Fabric, florals, carved top |
| Platform | Rare | Often raised |
| Rental | Often a frame plus drape | Frame, pillars, platform, seating |
Footprints above are planning ranges; the exact size depends on the number of people who will stand or sit inside, so ask the community leader and the rental company.
Sizing for the people inside
Count who will be inside the structure: couple, officiant, parents, witnesses, perhaps a small table for the ritual items. A chuppah that is too small leaves family out of the frame. A mandap needs room for a fire pit or ritual seating in some ceremonies, and that changes safety and venue rules.

Decor options
- Fabric drape in sheer white, ivory or a color that fits the theme.
- Florals on the posts and top, supplied by the florist.
- Greenery and candles (battery candles when flames are not allowed).
- Lighting with warm string lights for evening ceremonies.
- Seating inside for the couple, such as a pair of royal throne chairs or velvet chairs.
Venue and safety questions
- 1Step 1Is a fire or incense allowed? Some ceremonies use a ritual fire. Ask the venue about fire rules, ventilation and insurance.
- 2Step 2What is the ceiling height?Mandaps and canopies can be tall.
- 3Step 3Can the structure be anchored?Outdoors, use weights.
- 4Step 4What is the load-in time?Platforms and pillars are heavy.
- 5Step 5How will the family move around it?Leave space for the processions.
Reception reuse
Many families reuse the structure behind the sweetheart table or the stage. Ask whether it is easy to move, and whether the crew can do it during cocktail hour. See stage and riser sizes and pipe and drape for ideas on backdrops. For a South Asian wedding, read our guide to South Asian wedding seating.
Chicago planning notes
The Chicago area has many places with experience hosting both ceremony types, from banquet halls to temples to hotels. Do not assume that a venue allows a ritual fire, a raised platform or heavy pillars. Ask early and in writing. Confirm any requirements with your community leader. Winter weddings need a covered entry and a dry path for guests.
Mistakes to avoid
- Renting a structure before confirming customs and sizes with the officiant.
- Forgetting the ritual table and its power or fire needs.
- Choosing a structure taller than the ceiling.
- Skipping the weights outdoors.
