Black-tie means evening wear, a plated dinner and a room that feels like an occasion. The rental list is longer than a casual wedding's, and the details matter more because formality shows in small things: crisp linens, aligned place settings, matching glassware. Here is the list and the logic, tuned for Chicago ballrooms, clubs and historic venues.

What a formal table looks like

Chairs

Formal weddings are often photographed from a distance, so the chair silhouette matters. Gold infinity chairs, Louis medallion chairs and velvet dining chairs all suit black-tie. Clear ghost chairs keep floor-length linens visible. Gold finishes pair with ivory, black or champagne, silver pairs with white and blue-gray. Chair estimates per chair: gold infinity $9 to $13, velvet $18 to $25 and Louis $20 to $30. A royal throne for the couple is an option.

Tables and linens

  • Tables: 60 or 72-inch rounds, with a long head table or a sweetheart table.
  • Linens: floor-length, pressed, in a solid color. Satin, velvet and sequin overlays suit formal looks; see sequin linens and the tablecloth size chart.
  • Napkins: 20 x 20 inch cloth with a simple fold; see napkin folds.
  • Skirting: pleated skirts on the head table and buffet, if any.

Dinnerware, flatware and glassware

Item Black-tie count per guest Notes
Charger 1 Stays until the entree is served
Dinner plate 1 Plus salad and bread plates
Dessert plate 1 Often brought with dessert
Forks 2 to 3 Salad, dinner, dessert
Knives 1 to 2 Dinner, butter
Water goblet 1 Refilled
Wine glasses 1 to 2 Red and white
Champagne flute 1 For the toast

For counts, see how many forks, knives and spoons, are chargers worth it and wedding glassware types. Order a few extra of the small pieces for breakage and loss, and ask about the vendor's breakage policy.

Lighting and atmosphere

Black-tie rooms are usually lit warmly and low: candles in safe holders, uplights, pin spots on centerpieces and a chandelier or draping. See pin spot lighting and ceiling draping. Check venue rules on open flame.

The details guests notice

Formality is built from small, consistent decisions. Linens are pressed with no fold lines, and cloths hang evenly on every side. Chairs are the same height and finish. Place settings are measured, with the edge of each fork a thumb's width from the plate and the knife blade facing in. Glasses sit in a tidy line above the knife. Candles are the same height at every table. If you ask your rental company for one favor, ask that the crew set a sample table for your approval before the rest of the room is done. Changing one table is easy; changing 20 is not.

Think about what guests touch: the chair back, the napkin, the stem of the glass. A heavier flatware pattern and a real cloth napkin feel more formal than any centerpiece, and they cost far less to upgrade than the room itself.

Service and flow

Black-tie dinners are plated, with a captain and servers per table group. That means tighter spacing between tables: 5 feet between table edges so servers can pass with trays. Allow 10 to 12 square feet per guest or more.

Chicago venues and formal events

Chicago's ballrooms, private clubs and museums often have strict load-in windows, insurance requirements and rules on candles. Ask for the venue's rules in writing, and book rentals early for peak dates. A black-tie wedding in winter needs coat check, and in summer requires climate control in tents.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need for a black-tie wedding?

Formal chairs, floor-length linens, full place settings, multiple glasses and low, warm lighting. Plan for a plated dinner and good service.

Do I need charger plates?

They are common at black-tie weddings and add polish, but are optional. They also protect linens and set a place for first courses.

What chairs suit black-tie?

Gold or silver Chiavari-style chairs, Louis chairs, velvet dining chairs and clear ghost chairs.

How many glasses per guest?

Three to four: water, red wine, white wine or champagne. Add a rocks glass if you serve cocktails at the table.

What linens work best?

Solid, pressed, floor-length cloths in white, ivory, black or deep jewel tones. Add satin or velvet overlays for contrast.

Can I have black-tie in a tent?

Yes. Plan flooring, a liner or draping, lighting, heating or cooling and a prep area for the caterer.
