A backyard movie night looks easy, and it is, as long as the sightlines and the darkness are right. Most failures come from the same things: a screen that is too small for the distance, chairs that block the view for people behind them, and daylight that lingers until nine.

How far from the screen

Use the screen's width, not its diagonal, as the unit for outdoor viewing. Seats closer than 1.5 widths tilt the head, and seats farther than about 4 widths lose detail. These are common projector setup guidelines, so treat them as a starting range.

Seating in tiers

  • Row 1: blankets and floor cushions for kids and anyone happy to lie back.
  • Row 2: low chairs. Garden folding chairs, estimated at $5 to $7, sit lower than most.
  • Row 3: standard chairs. Cross-back chairs, $8 to $11, or rattan garden chairs for a cozy look.
  • Row 4: stools or standing room at the back.

Leave an aisle of at least 36 inches down one side so people can get to the snack table in the dark without stepping on a blanket. For lounge pieces and daybeds on lawns, see outdoor lounge rentals in Chicago.

Light, power and sound

Movies need darkness, but guests need to find their seats. Use small low lights along the aisle and the snack table, and turn off string lights once the movie starts. Keep the projector and sound system on a dedicated outdoor-rated power source. Read outdoor extension cord safety and projector and screen size before you plug in. A generator should sit away from seating, since it is loud; see generator size for events.

Chicago notes

Sunset in Chicago is around 8:30 p.m. in late June and July, so a movie that starts at 9 can end at 11 p.m. Check local noise rules for your village, and tell neighbors. Evenings near the lake cool quickly even in summer, so provide blankets, and in May and September wear a layer. Mosquitoes are common near water and wooded areas, so consider fans and citronella candles in safe holders. If rain is a risk, a tent over the screen is a bad idea because the beam needs a clear path, so plan a date to reschedule.

Make the lawn comfortable

People will sit for two hours, so comfort decides whether they stay for the credits. Offer a pile of blankets, cushions or bean bags for the front, since lying back is the most comfortable way to watch a screen set low. Add a few throw blankets on chair backs for chilly evenings. A shallow bin by the entrance can hold shoes if the front rows are covered in blankets.

Keep the snack table well away from the screen so the lights from the table do not wash it out. Use covered cups or bottles to stop spills in the dark. A bin of wrapped snacks that kids can reach without help keeps adults seated. Put trash cans at both ends of the seating and a flashlight in each, so cleanup after the show is quick. If you are showing something for children, plan the start time and the film length so it ends before bedtime, and offer a second, shorter option if the first one drags.

Frequently asked questions

How far should seats be from an outdoor movie screen?

Between 1.5 and 4 times the screen's width. For a 10-foot screen, that is 15 to 40 feet.

How many chairs do I need for movie night?

About two thirds of guests, because kids sit on blankets. For 30 guests, rent about 20 chairs.

What time should movie night start?

About 30 minutes after sunset. In Chicago that can be after 9 p.m. in midsummer.

Do I need a tent for movie night?

Not for the screen, but a tent over the snack table is helpful. Check the forecast and have a rain date.

Can I use a bed sheet as a screen?

Yes, but a smooth, taut screen looks better. Keep it flat and out of the wind.

What snacks work best?

Items that guests can hold in one hand in the dark: popcorn, wrapped candy, cups with lids. Provide a trash can near the exit.
