A Super Bowl party looks like a dinner party but behaves like a theater. Everyone faces one direction for three-plus hours, the food moves during commercials, and the crowd stands up at the same moments. The best layout puts sightlines first and food second.

Sightlines before furniture

Find the screen, then walk the room from every seat. The bigger the group, the more important this is.

Tiered seating plan for a Super Bowl party of 30 Top-down room with a screen on the top wall, a front row of two sofas with 6 seats, a middle row of 10 chairs, a back row of 8 stools at a counter, and food tables along the left and right sides behind the seating. Screen Sofas, 6 seats Chairs, row of 10 Counter and stools Food Drinks
Low seats in front, taller seats behind, and food tucked to the sides so nobody crosses the screen.

How far from the screen

A common home-theater rule is to sit about 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen's diagonal away. For a 65-inch TV that is roughly 8 to 13.5 feet. For a projector screen of 120 inches, it is 15 to 25 feet. Use this as a starting point for the first and last row, and adjust for the room.

Screen Closest seat Farthest seat Seats it serves well
55 in TV 7 ft 11 ft 8 to 10
65 in TV 8 ft 13 ft 12 to 15
85 in TV 11 ft 18 ft 18 to 24
120 in projector 15 ft 25 ft 30 or more

If your screen is smaller than the crowd, add a second screen on the side or in the next room. It keeps the party from splitting into those who can see and those who cannot.

What to rent

Seating

Mix heights. Garden folding chairs at $5 to $7 are easy to line up for a middle row. Cross-back chairs at $8 to $11 look better and are comfortable for a three-hour game. Bar-height stools at a counter fill the back row. For lounge-style seating, read lounge layout by guest count.

Tables

  • Two to three 42-inch cocktail tables near the seating for drinks and plates.
  • Two 8-foot tables for food, one for hot dishes and one for cold and desserts.
  • A drinks table with a tub, a beverage dispenser or both. See how many beverage dispensers you need.

Food equipment

Game day food is hot, saucy and constant. Chafing dishes keep wings, chili and dip warm. See how many chafing dishes for a buffet. Napkins matter more than usual; see how many napkins per guest.

Chicago-area notes

The Super Bowl falls in early to mid February, one of the coldest stretches of the Chicago winter. Plan for coats and boots, and a place to put them. Streets can be icy, so tell guests to leave extra time and give them a spot to park. If the game is at your home and you have a garage or heated porch, it can hold the overflow, but check heater clearances. Winter weather also affects deliveries, so ask your rental company about timing. Our winter wedding seating guide shows how rentals work in winter conditions.

Frequently asked questions

How many chairs do I need for a Super Bowl party?

About half of your guests, because people stand during big plays and food breaks. For 30 guests, rent 15 to 18 chairs on top of your own furniture.

How far should seats be from the TV?

Roughly 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal of the screen. A 65-inch TV works for seats 8 to 13 feet away.

Where should the food go?

To the side or the back of the room, out of the line between the seats and the screen. Two tables spread people out.

How do I keep the party from splitting?

Add a second screen if the first is not visible from everywhere, and place seats in the same room as the game. Guests in the kitchen miss the best plays.

What size tables work best?

42-inch cocktail tables near the seating, and 8-foot banquet tables for food. They are tall enough to eat at while standing.

Can I rent a projector screen?

Ask during your quote. Equipment options vary, and we can help you decide what fits your room.
