Table height seems simple until a guest on a stool cannot reach a plate. Rental companies use the same names with slightly different numbers, so confirm in inches. This guide covers each height, the chairs and stools that match and the cloths that cover them.

Heights are typical. A 12-inch gap between seat and tabletop is a good rule of thumb.

Height chart

Type Table height Seat height Floor-length drop
Standard 30 in 17 to 18 in 30 in
Counter 36 in 24 to 26 in 36 in
Bar / highboy 40 to 42 in 28 to 30 in 40 to 42 in (often tied)
Coffee / lounge 16 to 18 in Sofa None

Floor-length drop is the table height. Add twice that to the top size to get the cloth size, as in our tablecloth size chart.

Standard height (30 in)

The industry default for dining, banquet and farm tables. Guests need a chair with a 17 to 18-inch seat, which leaves a 12-inch gap to the table for legs. Almost every chair we offer is made for this height, including cross-back, ghost and bentwood.

Counter height (36 in)

Counter tables suit dessert stations, kitchen islands, high-top lounge seating and buffets where servers stand. Counter stools are 24 to 26 inches. Guests can stand or perch. Counter height helps servers reach food without bending.

Bar height (40 to 42 in)

Bar and highboy tables are for standing guests. See cocktail highboy vs lowboy tables and how many cocktail tables. Add bar stools of 28 to 30 inches for only some guests. A high stool is harder for older guests and for anyone in a dress or kilt.

Mixing heights in a room

A good event uses at least two heights: standard tables for dinner and tall tables for cocktail hour. Do not scatter all three evenly. Group tall tables near the bar and low ones near the dance floor. Leave a clear sightline over tall tables for speeches.

Accessibility

Standard-height tables work best for most guests, including wheelchair users, who need knee clearance of roughly 27 inches under a table. Ask your venue about ADA guidance. Offer at least some standard-height seating at every event.

Chicago note

Winter events in Chicago often use more tall tables near coat racks and bars, where guests stand. Keep seated tables for dinner so guests sit comfortably after a cold walk in. For outdoor events, tall tables are more wind-sensitive; ask about weighted bases.

A quick guide to pairing chairs and stools

The gap between the seat and the tabletop matters more than either number alone. Most people are comfortable with about 10 to 12 inches of clearance. If a stool is too low at a high table, guests dangle their elbows. If it is too high, they bang their knees.

For a 30-inch table, use a standard 17 to 18-inch chair. For a 36-inch table, use a 24 to 26-inch stool. For a 42-inch table, use a 28 to 30-inch stool. Stools with a backrest and a foot rail are far more comfortable for guests who stay more than 20 minutes. Backless stools suit short cocktail receptions.

Setting heights in a room

A good floor plan gives each height a job. Standard tables are for dinner, the place where you plan to be seated for an hour or more. Counter tables suit dessert, a coffee bar or a buffet where guests serve themselves. Bar tables belong next to the bar, in the reception area and in lounge corners. When you shop for rentals, ask which heights the rental company stocks, because some only offer one cocktail height. In Chicago, event spaces often provide their own bar-height tables, so ask first.
