How much room a 60-inch round gives you: 8 place settings, the center zone for centerpieces, candles and menus, with measurements and a top-down diagram.

The 60-inch round is the default wedding table, and every couple wants to put something on it: flowers, candles, menus, table numbers, favors, maybe a bottle of wine. The table is only 5 feet across. Here is what really fits, and how to avoid a crowded tabletop in a Chicago ballroom.

Top-down view of a 60 inch round table with 8 place settings A top-down diagram of a 60 inch round table with 8 place settings spaced evenly around the edge, each about 18 inches deep, and a clear 24 inch center circle for the centerpiece, with a dimension arrow across the table. 24 in center 60 in table 8 settings 24 in per guest
Each setting reaches in about 18 inches. What remains in the middle is the centerpiece zone.

The math

A 60-inch table has a circumference of about 188 inches (60 x 3.14). Divide by 8 guests and each gets about 23.5 inches of edge. The standard setting is 24 inches wide, so 8 guests is the comfortable limit. Each setting reaches about 18 inches inward. That leaves 60 minus 36, or 24 inches, in the middle. With 10 guests the edge per guest is 18.8 inches, which is tight.

  • Low arrangements: 8 to 12 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide. Best for conversation.
  • Tall arrangements: on a thin stem at 24 to 30 inches and above, with nothing between at eye level.
  • Candles: three votives in the center plus a few around the base.
  • Runners: a 12 to 16-inch circle of fabric or a cross-shaped runner.
  • Menus: on the plate, not in a stand.

What does not fit

  • A 30-inch-wide floral arrangement plus candles and sweets.
  • Bottles of wine at every seat plus a shared platter.
  • Family-style platters on a table with a large centerpiece.
  • A cake stand, a table number and a guestbook.

If you serve family style, use a 72-inch round or lower the centerpiece to a single bud vase. See round table sizes.

Chicago practicalities

Venues in Chicago may have rules about open flame. Many hotels and event spaces require enclosed candles, so check before you plan candle-heavy tables. Wind, drafts from doors and winter humidity all affect flowers. Ask your florist for a centerpiece that sits steady.

Chairs matter too

A wide chair eats table edge. Slim chairs such as cross-back or bentwood leave more room than a bulky royal throne. Browse them in our chair guide.

Three tabletop recipes that work

Classic plated dinner. Charger, dinner plate, bread plate, water and wine glasses, and flatware for each guest. In the middle, a low arrangement 10 inches tall, three votives and the table number on a thin stand. Menus sit on the plate. Salt and pepper are not needed because the kitchen seasons.

Family-style dinner. A simple plate, a water glass and one wine glass for each guest. In the middle, a long runner with two low bud vases and room for two platters. The table number is on a stake or card holder at the edge of the center zone. Because food covers the table, skip candles in the center and put them on a nearby ledge.

Buffet dinner. Plate, napkin-wrapped flatware and a water glass are set at each place. Because food comes from the buffet, there is room in the center for a taller arrangement on a stem, a basket of bread and two candles. Add a card with the table name.

Test it before the big day

Set one table at home or at your venue walkthrough, with the real plates, glasses and centerpiece. Sit down at it with a friend. Can you see across? Can you reach your glass? If not, remove one item. Take a photo and share it with your florist and caterer so everyone works from the same layout.

Remember that servers need to reach in to place plates and clear them. A cluttered center makes this hard and slows service in a room with 100 or more guests.
