Thanksgiving Dinner for a Crowd: Plan, Seat and Serve 20+
Host Thanksgiving dinner for 20 or more with turkey amounts, a cooking timeline, seating and table math, a kids table plan and Chicago rental tips.

Hosting Thanksgiving for 8 is a recipe. Hosting for 20 or 30 is a logistics problem. The oven can only hold one bird, the dining table seats ten, the fridge is full by Tuesday and the dishes pile up before dessert. The fix is to plan the schedule, the seating and the equipment together, and to lean on rentals and helpers.

Count the guests and the space
Start with a firm headcount, including kids, and a plan for where everyone sits. A standard dining table seats 8 to 10. For 20, add a second table or rent long tables. Plan 20 to 24 inches of table width per person so no one is crowded. If space is tight, use a buffet for the food so the tables hold only plates and drinks.
Turkey and food amounts
A whole turkey needs about 1 to 1.5 pounds per person, which includes bones and leftovers. A 20-pound bird feeds about 12 to 16 people. For 20 to 30 guests, cook two turkeys, or one turkey and a ham or turkey breast. For sides, plan about half a cup to one cup of each dish per person and expect guests to try most of them. A rough guide: 3 to 4 sides, 1 or 2 vegetables, rolls, gravy, cranberry sauce, and 2 or 3 desserts. See how much food per person. Stay safe with raw poultry: thaw in the fridge, cook to 165 F in the thickest part and chill leftovers within two hours.
Build a cooking timeline
A clear schedule keeps the day calm.
Monday to Tuesday: thaw the turkey, shop, clean the fridge and set up the table.
Wednesday: bake pies, make cranberry sauce, prep vegetables, set the table and chill drinks.
Thursday morning: roast the turkey, make stuffing and casseroles, and chill drinks.
An hour before dinner: rest the turkey, reheat sides, make gravy and set out appetizers.
Dinner: carve at the counter, serve buffet-style or family-style, and sit down together.
Use the oven in sequence, not all at once. A roaster, slow cooker and warming trays free up oven space. See food safety at home parties and keeping food hot.
Food and seating by guest count
| Guests | Turkey (raw weight) | Tables | Chairs | Plates (dinner and dessert) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 | 14 to 18 lb | 1 large or 2 small | 12 | 24 |
| 20 | 22 to 30 lb (2 birds) | 2 to 3 | 20 | 40 |
| 30 | 30 to 45 lb (2 to 3 birds) | 3 to 4 | 30 | 60 |
| 40 | 40 to 60 lb (3 birds) | 5 | 40 | 80 |
Amounts are typical starting points. If you want leftovers, add a pound or two. For plates and silverware, see how many plates per guest and how many forks, knives and spoons per guest.
Seating plan and the kids table
Seat grandparents near the kitchen and restrooms, and seat chatty guests across from each other. A kids table works well for children 4 and older, with their own plates and simple food. Place a trusted teen or adult nearby. Use place cards, since they save the confusion of finding a seat. See kids tables and chairs for events and seating chart for blended families.
Buffet or family style
For 20 or more, a buffet saves table space and reduces passing. Place the buffet where guests can circulate in a loop, with plates at the start and silverware at the end. See buffet line flow and serving speed and dinnerware sizes: buffet, plated, family style. Family style looks warm but needs bigger tables.
Rentals worth considering
Tables, chairs, linens, plates, silverware, glassware, chafing dishes and a coat rack. See friendsgiving dinnerware and friendsgiving party for 20 rentals. Rentals also save you from washing 60 plates by hand.
Delegate
Assign each guest a dish, a drink or a task. Ask a friend to handle drinks and another to handle dessert. Have a plan for dishes and leftovers, including containers to send food home.
Table setting and decor
A simple look works: autumn linens, candles, small pumpkins and gourds. Keep the center of the table low enough for people to see each other. See linen colors by season.

Chicago-area notes
Thanksgiving in the Chicago area often comes with early snow, cold and wind, and it is also one of the busiest travel days. Arrange parking and coat space, because 20 coats take up a lot of room. See coat racks for winter events. If you use a rental truck for tables and chairs, ask about delivery times before the holiday, as schedules can be limited. In condos and two-flats, coordinate with neighbors on parking. See planning a November event in Chicago. Check road conditions for guests traveling from the suburbs.
