Serving pieces are the part of a dinnerware order that gets underestimated. A caterer arrives with roast chicken and no platter big enough to carry it. Salad piles up in a bowl meant for dips. Whether you are hosting 25 at home in Evanston or 150 at a hall in the western suburbs, a few decisions on count and size keep service smooth. This guide is about planning, not prices; we do not publish dinnerware prices.

Pieces and sizes

Typical serving platter and bowl sizes Four serving pieces drawn side by side: an oval platter 16 inches long feeding 8 to 10 people, a round platter 14 inches, a salad bowl 12 inches feeding 8 and a side bowl 9 inches feeding 4 to 6. 16 in oval14 in round12 in bowl9 in bowl 8 to 108 to 1084 to 6
Servings per piece are rules of thumb for a single dish; heavier mains need a bigger piece.

How many pieces for your guest count

Guests Mains and sides (about 4 dishes) Serving pieces for a buffet For family-style
25 4 4 to 5 8 to 12
50 4 to 5 8 to 10 20 to 25
100 5 10 to 15 40 to 50
150 5 to 6 15 to 20 60 to 75

These are planning estimates. Buffets repeat each dish across two lines for larger groups, and family-style repeats each dish at each table. Our family-style serving ware guide goes deeper on table counts. For plate counts, see how many plates per guest.

Match the piece to the dish

  • Platters suit sliced meat, whole fish, roasted vegetables, sandwiches and desserts.
  • Large bowls suit salads, pasta, grain dishes and fruit.
  • Small bowls suit sauces, dressings, condiments and sides such as nuts.
  • Gravy boats and pitchers suit sauces and syrups.
  • Cake stands and tiered trays suit desserts and charcuterie.

Heavier dishes need rims to catch juices. A flat platter works for dry foods but not for braised or saucy ones.

Serving utensils

Every platter and bowl needs a spoon, fork or tongs. Count one utensil per dish, plus a spare. Spoons get dropped, and a shared utensil sits in a dirty bowl. Ask whether utensils come with the rental or from the caterer.

Keeping food hot and cold

China platters cool quickly. Caterers often use chafing dishes for hot food on a buffet and transfer to platters for presentation. For cold dishes outdoors, use bowls set on ice. Our catering equipment pages cover chafers and warmers in detail; start at the catering equipment topic.

Table space

A 6-foot banquet table can hold about 4 to 6 serving pieces comfortably. A 60-inch round with 8 settings has room for 2 or 3 platters in the center. Tall pieces make it harder to see across the table. Put platters on a runner or a few cake stands to build height without crowding. See place setting spacing.

Weight and transport

Large platters are heavy when full. If you are carrying food into a venue, check the stairs and elevator. Chicago high-rise venues may need freight elevator time; ask your venue about load-in windows. See delivery and packing crates.

Presentation details that help

Height makes a buffet look abundant. Place a few platters on risers, cake stands or overturned crates covered in linen, and keep the rest flat. Fill dishes about three-quarters full and refill often rather than overloading. Label dishes with small cards, which also helps guests with allergies. Leave a clear 12 to 18 inches in front of each dish so guests have room to serve, and put the spoon handle toward the guest.

Frequently asked questions

How many serving platters do I need for 50 guests?

For a buffet with 4 to 5 dishes, plan about 8 to 10 pieces so popular items can be refilled. Family-style needs far more because each table gets a set.

What size platter feeds 10 people?

A 14 to 16-inch platter holds a main dish for about 8 to 10 people. Heavier or saucy dishes may need a larger platter or two smaller ones.

Do I need separate serving utensils?

Yes. Each dish needs its own spoon, fork or tongs. Add one spare per dish.

Can the caterer supply platters?

Many can. Ask what is included so you do not rent duplicates. If the caterer does not provide them, add them to your rental order.

What do I use for sauces?

Small bowls or gravy boats with ladles. Count one per sauce, and one per table at a family-style dinner.

How do I keep food from getting cold on platters?

Serve in small batches and refill often. Use warmers or chafing dishes behind the line if your caterer has them.
