Planning an Event in Wheaton: Rentals, Permits, Parks & Venues
Planning an event in Wheaton, IL: the City event permit, Wheaton Park District picnic rentals, Memorial Park, Cosley Zoo and tips on rentals and delivery.

Wheaton is the DuPage County seat, with a walkable downtown, a college campus, and a park district known for its parks and zoo. It is a good place for weddings, graduation parties and community fundraisers, and a confusing one if you do not know which office to call. This guide sorts that out.
Two offices, two kinds of land
Wheaton splits into two permit paths. The City of Wheaton publishes an Event Permit page for events that use public property, such as streets, sidewalks and City-owned spaces. The Wheaton Park District has its own picnic area rentals and a park rentals brochure for its parks. Neither office can approve the other's property.
If you are unsure whether your spot is City or district land, ask the park district first; its staff can usually tell you.
What Wheaton offers by space type
- Park picnic areas. The Wheaton Park District rents picnic areas. The rental brochure lists the options, so check current capacities and rules.
- Memorial Park. This park has a bandshell used for concerts. Ask the district what use it allows outside programmed events.
- Cosley Zoo. Run by the Wheaton Park District, it is a well-known family destination. Ask the district whether it hosts private events and under what terms.
- Downtown Wheaton. Streets and sidewalks are a City matter, and the Event Permit page is the start.
- Private venues, banquet rooms and homes. Wheaton has hotels, restaurants and many large homes; rules come from the venue or the owner.
| Space type | Good for | Ask first |
|---|---|---|
| City streets and property | Parades, fairs, 5Ks | City of Wheaton Event Permit |
| Park picnic areas | Graduations, reunions | Wheaton Park District |
| Bandshell and park lawns | Concerts, community events | Wheaton Park District |
| Hotel or banquet room | Receptions, galas | The venue |
Alcohol and tents: ask, do not assume
Park districts often have specific alcohol rules, and those rules differ by park and by event type. Do not assume that because a spot allows a picnic it also allows a keg, a bar or a tent. Ask the district directly, and ask the City if your event needs a temporary liquor license. For tents, read our tent permit guide for Chicago suburbs.
Delivery from our St. Charles base
Wheaton is a straightforward drive east from St. Charles, mostly along the arterial roads that cross DuPage County. Plan around rush hour, when Roosevelt Road, Geneva Road and the Main Street area can slow down. Ask the venue for the unloading location, especially downtown. College events around Wheaton College may affect traffic on certain weekends, so check dates.

Seasonal notes
Spring is busy with graduations and open houses, so rentals go early. Summer picnics are common in the parks; heat and shade are the main questions. Fall is the best outdoor season for weddings. In December, sunset is about 4:20 pm, so indoor lighting matters. For weather tips see the seasons and venues archive.
Wheaton setup example
A graduation party for 80 in a park picnic area could use 10 rounds of 8 (80 seats) and a few banquet tables for food. Garden folding chairs (about $5-7 each, an estimate) keep the cost down, and cross-back chairs (about $8-11) feel more polished. The open-house graduation layout shows a layout you can adapt.
Counting everything for a Wheaton event
Before you request a quote, walk through your event in order and count each item once.
- Arrival: a welcome table, a sign-in or gift table, and cocktail tables if you serve drinks.
- Ceremony or program: chairs in rows, an aisle or two, and an area for speakers.
- Meal: guest tables, a buffet line or serving tables, and a beverage station.
- Extras: a cake or dessert table, a DJ table, and a table for takeaway favors.
A clean count saves money because you avoid last-minute add-ons. Our chair counting guide walks through the seating side. If your guest list is still moving, a range is fine, and we can show you the price at 80, 100 and 120 guests. Whether you live in Wheaton or are coming from Chicago for a family event, the same counting steps apply.
