Planning an Event in Naperville: Rentals, Permits, Parks & Venues
Planning an event in Naperville, IL: city special event permits, tent permits, the Riverwalk, Naperville Park District rentals and delivery tips.

Naperville is the biggest suburb in this guide, and one of the busiest event markets in the west suburbs. It straddles DuPage and Will counties, has a famous Riverwalk, and strict, well-documented rules. If your event is public, plan for weeks, not days.
Naperville's permit process in plain terms
The City of Naperville has a Special Events Permit and Planning Procedures page, run through the Community Services Department. For events that need additional approval, City Council review can take up to 60 days. The City also opens applications for the following year in advance: its 2026 announcement covered 2027 events, so popular dates can be taken early. Tent permit questions go to the Building Permits page, and the tent permit page itself does not list size thresholds, so ask the City about yours.
The Naperville Park District has its own side: pavilion rentals, special event rentals and a facility rental permit. If you want a park pavilion, go to the district first.
Where Naperville events happen
- The Riverwalk. The Naperville Riverwalk follows the DuPage River through downtown. It is a public space with its own rules, so ask the City what is allowed.
- Park district pavilions and parks. The district rents pavilions and runs a special events rental process. Centennial Beach is a well-known district facility.
- Downtown Naperville. Streets and sidewalks fall under City rules.
- Banquet halls, hotels and clubs. Naperville has plenty of indoor options. Ask each what furniture is included.
- Private homes and backyards. Lots vary a lot; many are narrow, so measure before you order.
| Space type | Good for | Ask first |
|---|---|---|
| Riverwalk or downtown | Festivals, large public events | City of Naperville |
| Park pavilion | Receptions, picnics | Naperville Park District |
| Tent on any property | Weddings, tent parties | City building permits |
| Hotel or banquet hall | Galas, dinners | The venue |
Tips for Naperville planners
Match your permit plan to your risk. A private backyard with a tent still needs a tent conversation. A public event on the Riverwalk needs the City. A park pavilion needs the district. Our guide to tent permits in Chicago suburbs shows what to ask any village.
Delivery from St. Charles
Naperville is a longer drive from our St. Charles base than the Fox Valley towns, and it crosses the I-88 and I-355 corridor, where traffic is heavy at rush hour. We plan Naperville drops outside peak commuting hours, and we ask you for a firm access window. Downtown parking is limited, so confirm the unloading spot and the walking distance before delivery.
Seasons
Naperville is busy from May through October. Riverwalk events cluster in summer, so the City's early application window matters. In December, downtown fills for the holidays. Check our guide on when to book event rentals.

Naperville setup example
For a 120-guest corporate reception in a pavilion, plan 15 rounds of 8 (120 seats) or 12 rounds of 10. A velvet dining chair (about $18-25, an estimate) works for a head table, and cross-back chairs fill the room.
Building a Naperville rental list
Naperville events skew large, so the list is where you save the most time. Work in this order.
- Count seats. Add up dinner guests, then add the head table, DJ and band.
- Pick the table plan. A 60-inch round seats 8 comfortably and a 72-inch round seats 10. See how many tables for 50-200 guests.
- Match linens. Order floor-length cloths for guest tables and add spares for the gift and cake tables. See the tablecloth size chart.
- Add comfort. Tents, heaters in cool months and fans in summer all change power needs.
- Plan the load-in. Ask your venue where trucks can stop and how far the carry is.
