A table is four layers: cloth, charger, plate and napkin. When all four are different, it looks chaotic. When they follow a rule, even a long banquet table looks designed. This guide gives rules and a chart you can use for a wedding in a Chicago ballroom, a gala or a garden party. We do not publish linen or dinnerware prices; this is about the look.

A pairing chart

Plate and cloth contrast examples Four tabletop swatches show a white plate on ivory cloth, a gold-rim plate on dark cloth, a colored plate on white cloth and a white plate with a gold charger on a gray cloth. Each shows good contrast between plate and cloth. IvoryDarkWhiteGray
The plate should never disappear into the cloth: look for a clear step in lightness.
Linen Best plates Napkin Charger
White Any: white, colored, patterned White, or a plate color Gold, silver, natural
Ivory White, ivory, gold rim Ivory or blush Gold, rattan
Black Gold rim, white White, gold Gold, mirror
Navy Gold rim, white White, ivory Gold, silver
Blush White, gold rim Ivory, deeper blush Gold, clear
Sage or green White, ivory Ivory, natural Gold, wood
Natural or burlap White, colored Natural, rust Wood, rattan

Five rules

  1. Contrast the plate with the cloth. White on white loses the plate, and ivory on ivory looks muddy.
  2. Repeat one color. A napkin in the plate color or in the flower color ties the table together.
  3. Keep metals in one family. Gold rim, gold charger, gold flatware. Mixing silver and gold looks accidental.
  4. Let one layer be bold. If the cloth is patterned, plates should be plain. See colored and patterned plates.
  5. Test in the venue's light. Warm bulbs turn whites to cream and navy to black.

Layered looks

A cloth with a runner, charger and napkin is the classic formal stack. If the cloth is already textured (sequin, velvet, linen weave), keep the plate and napkin simple. Our tablecloth size chart shows sizes, and gold-rim vs white china goes through the plate choice.

Matching to chairs

Plates and cloths share the table with the chair. Warm wood cross-back chairs suit natural linen and white plates, gold infinity chairs suit gold-rim plates and dark cloths, and clear ghost chairs work with almost anything. See chair rentals and weddings for chair styling.

Season and setting

Winter weddings in Chicago lean toward deep colors and metallics; summer and garden parties lean toward light linens and colored plates. Fall events use rust, plum and green. Outdoor events in strong sun can wash out pale linens, so test with a sample outside.

What to do when you cannot get a sample

Ask the rental company for photos on a similar cloth, and ask for the exact color names. Order a small swatch set if offered. Keep colors simple if you cannot view them: white or ivory plates and a napkin in the cloth color.

A worked example

Say you choose a navy cloth for a November wedding in Chicago. Add ivory napkins, white gold-rim plates and a gold charger. Flatware in gold repeats the metal, candles add warm light and the chairs are clear or gold. The table has one metal, two neutrals and one deep color, which reads as intentional. Now swap the navy for sage: keep the white plates, switch the rims to plain, and use natural wood chargers. The structure stays the same even though the mood changes. Use that formula for any color you choose.

Frequently asked questions

What color plates go with a white tablecloth?

Almost any color works on white. White plates look clean, while colored or patterned plates add interest.

Do gold-rim plates go with navy linens?

Yes. Navy and gold is a classic pairing because the rim stands out on the dark cloth.

Should the napkin match the plate or the tablecloth?

Either, but not both and not a new color. A napkin in the plate color makes the plate pop.

Can I mix metals on a table?

It is possible but risky. Keep gold with gold and silver with silver for a planned look.

What color napkin goes on a white plate?

Any color with contrast. White-on-white works but is flat, so ivory, blush, sage or gold adds interest.

How do I check colors online?

Request a sample or photos and compare them in the venue's light. Screens change colors, so a physical swatch is best.
