Casino nights are a classic for fundraisers, company parties and milestone birthdays. The room fills with felt and chips, guests dress up and everyone gets a reason to mingle. They also have more moving parts than most rentals: tables, dealers, chips, lighting, seating and legal rules. This guide helps you size the room, pick games and avoid the mistakes that cause long lines at the blackjack table.

Table types and how many people each serves

Game Players at once Typical table size Space to plan Dealers
Blackjack 5 to 7 About 7 ft wide, half-circle About 10 x 10 ft 1
Roulette 6 to 8 About 6 to 8 ft long About 10 x 12 ft 1 to 2
Poker (Texas hold'em) 8 to 10 About 8 ft oval About 12 x 12 ft 1
Craps 8 to 12 About 9 to 12 ft long About 12 x 14 ft 2 to 3
Wheel of fortune Several Small table or wheel About 8 x 8 ft 1

These are typical dimensions from vendors and gaming suppliers, and not strict rules. Ask your vendor for exact footprints.

How many tables for your guest count?

A good rule of thumb is one table for every 20 to 25 guests, because many guests mingle, eat or watch. Mix games so lines stay short: blackjack and roulette draw the crowds, and poker draws a smaller, longer-staying group.

Bar chart of recommended casino tables by guest count Bars show tables for 50 guests: 2 to 3, for 100 guests: 4 to 5, for 150 guests: 6 to 7, and for 200 guests: 8 to 10. The tallest bar is 10 tables for 200 guests. 3 5 7 10 50 100 150 200

Room layout

Casino rooms look best when they feel busy but not crowded. Follow these steps.

  1. 1Step 1Mark exits, bar and foodfirst.
  2. 2Step 2Place gaming tableswith 10 to 12 feet each and 4-foot aisles.
  3. 3Step 3Add seatingat the edges: stools, cocktail tables and a lounge.
  4. 4Step 4Set a cashier or chip tablenear the entrance.
  5. 5Step 5Light the tablesand keep the rest of the room dim.
Mark exits, bar and food, then Place gaming tables, then Add seating, then Set a cashier or chip table, then Light the tables

Keep the busiest tables, such as roulette and blackjack, away from doors and the bar line. Put poker at the quieter end, where players sit for a while. For seating, plan 25 to 35 percent of guests in a lounge or at high tables, as in our post on lounge layout by guest count. Highboys and bar stools around the tables let guests watch, and lounge furniture offers a break from standing.

Dealers, chips and prizes

  • Dealers. Most casino rental companies provide trained dealers. Ask how many are included and for how long.
  • Chips. Fun money is the norm. Guests get a starting stack, and can buy more for a donation at fundraisers.
  • Prizes. Raffle tickets and prizes bought with chips are the common approach at charity events.
  • Cashier. A table where guests exchange tickets or money for chips.
  • Rules cards at each table, for first-timers.

Casino-style games, especially at fundraisers where guests give money, are regulated. Illinois law covers charitable games and raffles, and many cities and villages add local rules. Do not assume a license is not needed because chips have no cash value. Ask your village clerk, the Illinois Department of Revenue and your vendor what is required for your event type and guest donations, before you promote it. A vendor that supplies equipment for entertainment-only "fun money" games may have different requirements from a charitable gaming event, so ask which one you are running.

Seating and furniture

Dealers stand and players sit, so the tables need either high stools or standard chairs. Many rental tables are set for standing play with rails. Add a few seated options, such as chairs at poker, and a lounge for guests who do not play. Provide a table for food, a bar and a prize display. See card box and gift table ideas if guests will be handing in donations or tickets. Add cocktail tables with floor-length linens; the tablecloth size chart lists sizes.

Chicago notes

Many casino nights happen in banquet halls, hotel ballrooms and union halls, where floor loads, lighting and sprinklers are not an issue, but table and cord placement are. Ask the venue about tape on floors, power for table lights and load-in times. Winter events need coat check; see coat racks for winter events.

Frequently asked questions

How many casino tables do I need for 100 guests?

About 4 or 5, with a mix of blackjack, roulette and poker. Add a craps table if the crowd is large and you have room.

How much space does a casino table need?

About 10 to 12 feet square for most tables, and more for craps. Leave 4-foot aisles between tables.

Do casino rentals come with dealers?

Often, yes. Ask the vendor how many dealers are included and for how long.

Can I give real prizes at a casino night?

It depends on how the event is run and what Illinois and local rules require. Ask your village and the Illinois Department of Revenue before you plan prizes or charge entry.

How do chips work?

Guests start with fun money chips, and many hosts sell more for a donation. At the end, chips go toward raffle tickets or prizes.

What furniture goes with casino tables?

High stools, cocktail tables with linens, a lounge and a cashier table. A bar and food station complete the room.
