Planning an Event in Aurora: Rentals, Permits, Parks & Venues
Planning an event in Aurora, IL: the six permit tiers and lead times, Fox Valley Park District, RiverEdge Park, and what the city does not supply.

Aurora is the second-largest city in Illinois, and it has the clearest published permit system of any town in this series. If you plan a street event, a festival or a large gathering, the tiers tell you how much lead time to allow. If you plan a private party, you can skip most of it.
The six tiers
According to the City of Aurora, a Special Event Permit falls into one of six tiers based on scale and impact:
- Tier 1: multi-day events, street or sidewalk use, temporary liquor licenses, more than 1,000 attendees per day, food vendors, fireworks or carnivals.
- Tier 2: gatherings at City property with under 1,000 attendees per day, events needing extra City services, or stationary events affecting up to two blocks.
- Tier 3: events with no alcohol that affect one block, need only a temporary street closure or last under five hours on City property without food or drink.
- Tier 4: smaller events, such as small runs or vehicle shows.
- Tier 5: film productions.
- Tier 6: assemblies needing only basic City support, with no traffic control and no sales.
A $25 non-refundable application fee is invoiced after initial review. If Police or Fire staffing is required, the organizer pays for City personnel, with a 25% deposit due at least 10 days before the event.
What the City does not supply
The City's page says it does not provide equipment such as portable restrooms, sound systems, tables, chairs or tents. That is where rentals come in. For a Tier 2 or Tier 3 event, you will want a rental list that covers seating, tables, shade and any bar or serving equipment, and you will want to book it before your permit is final, since popular dates go fast.
Where Aurora events happen
- Downtown Aurora. The Paramount Theatre, the Fox River and downtown streets host festivals. Street use is a City permit.
- RiverEdge Park. The City lists rental forms for events at RiverEdge Park on its event pages.
- Fox Valley Park District. The district manages most parks and its own runs-and-walks permit form.
- Banquet halls and hotels. Plenty of indoor options. Ask each what furniture is included.
- Private homes. Aurora is large; lot sizes vary widely.
| Space type | Good for | Ask first |

Delivery from St. Charles
Aurora is in the Fox Valley south of us, a reasonable drive down the river corridor. Because Aurora is large, check the address: east-side and downtown deliveries differ from far-east neighborhoods. Tell us where the truck can unload, especially for downtown events, where closures can affect access.

An Aurora setup example
A 200-person Tier 2 community fundraiser in a park could use 25 rounds of 8 and 200 chairs. The least expensive option is garden folding chairs (about $5-7, an estimate); cross-back chairs (about $8-11) look more finished. See how many tables for 50-200 guests.
Planning rentals around an Aurora permit
Because the City does not supply tables, chairs or tents, your rental plan and your permit plan depend on each other. Here is a sensible order for a Tier 2 or Tier 3 event.
- Confirm the date and tier with the City's events office.
- Sketch the footprint of the event and count seats, tables, a bar and a stage.
- Request a quote so you know what is available on your date.
- Add rentals to your site plan before final City review, since inspectors may want to see tent locations and fire lanes.
- Confirm delivery access, especially if streets will be closed.
